Having seen all the nominees for the Lead categories gives me rigorous perspective on whom deserves to win and whom WILL win. In short, these two parameters do not intersect.

For the two-man horse race between Cooper and Bale, I think Bale is far more likely to win, as a) his performance is pretty damned good, b) Cooper is bound to get a bunch of potential Oscar wins in several different categories for his film, so the actors of SAG may not feel terribly obligated to award him, and c) Bale is playing a real life person, while Cooper is rehashing a familiar role. In terms of whom I think deserves to win between these guys, I narrowly give it to Cooper who’s self-contained, silently intense and mannerism-devoid performance resonates a bit greater emotionally than Bale’s acting technique of going full Christian Bale, i.e. the 40lb weight gain, extended (admittedly near perfect) mimicry of Cheney and heavy set gait.

As for Mortensen, he’s the best, most energetic, and most steadfast part of a rather unfocused film in Green Book by the resurgent Peter Farrelly and anchors the pace of the film well in spite of a rather disinterested Mahershala Ali whom critics are bafflingly praising as “masterfully understated”. I actually believe he’s fourth to win this category, and is probably third for me in terms of deserving the win behind Bale and Cooper. His performance is one of great nuance, and he does well to step into a clearly conflicted and intense boofhead of an Italian guy and not make him totally detestable (in fact, he’s rather likeable, which is a rarity for protagonists of Farrelly films).

Malek gives a enthusiastic and charismatic performance as Fred Fred (much unlike his real self so points awarded for the transformation), but it’s probably the biggest and most flamboyant (no disrespect intended) of these five. It’s a BROAD performance with a capital B, but he’s severely one-note at times as Bohemian Rhapsody only intends to make the hallmark of the man his sexuality, with very little focus on the fact he could be a dastardly, shrewd, bubbly, plaintive and mournful individual at times, and all at once. It needed to focus on that MORE. It is a shame the film is so undercooked, because if it dared to show the full image of the man and not one shade of him, Malek would correspondingly be much better. I still think it’s a strong, vibrant, externalised turn; in fact, all five generally are quite great, but due to the one-note nature of his film, he falls prey to its pestilence of little room for growth. He’s not going to win, coming in dead last in my eyes in both deservingness and chance of winning.

Now for Son Washington, I actually quite liked his work. The film is rather fast-paced and he matches the tone and pace of it well. He’s got that innate charisma to him that bounces off the screen similar to Denzel in his prime that makes you take notice. His performance is a strong mix of comedy and drama, and he anchors his film solidly alongside Driver’s “performance within a performance”. He’s fourth best of this category, being truthful, and I actually believe since he’s got a superstar father, he might be third most likely to win based off of pure name credibility.

So what do you think? Agree with my assessments or have your own?

I don’t understand why Cooper is the presumed front runner. I have him in 4th.

Cooper is incredibly charismatic and likeable, he’s hollywood’s nice guy. Look at the acting contingent that turned up for him at the American Cinematheque award ceremony last month. I’m not saying Bale isn’t likeable. There are articles out there highlighting accounts of his method acting and work ethic as incredible but not much is said on the friendship bonds formed. And let’s not forget that Terminator: Salvation outburst.

Personally, I think Bale is the better actor of the two and in the industry Bale has greater craft respect compared to Cooper but in the age of SAG-AFTRA I think Cooper’s personality and comparably more popular film gives him the advantage.

While I admire Bale in general I don’t think he will win this and here’s why: he is almost Gary Oldman 2.0 this year: playing historical figure, playing big politician, going into full physical transformation for his role. I’m pretty sure they won’t give BA Oscar second year in a row for such performance.
Also in the current political climate in US giving Oscar for playing Cheney is kinda off too.

You may be onto something regarding Cooper’s easy likability vs Bale’s tough man actor shtick. But I don’t know if that’ll derail Bale’s chances to win at SAG unless Mortensen takes the comedy Globe and gains momentum, and we all know that Cooper’s a near lock for Drama Actor so it might become “Mortensen vs Cooper”. Plus, the Academy LIKES how serious Bale is, and he can be somewhat quirky and humorous when he turns it on (as evidenced by his The Fighter Oscar speech).

Regarding his outburst on Terminator: Salvation, people are paid to get their jobs right. The DP on the set was continually effing up and given how method-y and immersion-focused an actor Bale is, it can be hard and extremely irritating to have to do multiple re-takes. It does make him look like an absolute moron how much he cussed over a little mistake, but I think people will have forgiven him over that by now.

As for who’s a better actor; it’s close. I can’t choose between these men, they’re both among the best, male or female.

Rami Malek for the win! (:

Seriously it’s Cooper vs. Malek. I am hoping all the love for Bohemian Rhapsody will translate in to a surprise win for him. I know that Cooper is the frontrunner but I remain stubborn in my belief that Malek can surprise and win it.

All the love for BR is already transforming into Oscar nomination for him. But the win is very unlikely, even if BR is nominated for BP.

It’s Cooper vs Malek at Drama and Bale vs Mortensen at Comedy/Musical. That is, before the Globes its a four horse race, and after the Globes it will be a two horse one.

Cooper and Bale at the Globes, Malek at SAG/BAFTA and…Cooper at the Oscars.

Well, this title didn’t hold up well.

Yes! I was actually reading at the comments and was like WTF?!?!? Then I looked at the dates and figured out this all happened pre-Cooper’s funeral service. And now everything is all right with the world.

Honestly, I just hope the most despised performance wins tonight regardless of what that is. Hubby Viggo is not happening and Ethan is MIA so I want to see meltdowns.
