I’m curious, do you think Johansson deserved her double Oscar nominations for the 2020 season? I really liked her performance in Jojo Rabbit, and thought the nomination for Supporting Actress was worthy, but IMO she didn’t deserve the nomination for Marriage Story.

No way. It’s obvious that Kathy Bates took Lopez’s spot. I really loved that Scarlett got two nominations in a single year after being snubbed especially for Lost in Translation. She deserved it 100 percent.
ReplyCopy URLApril 5, 2021 at 9:35 pm #1204181030She deserved it for Jojo Rabbit. She gave a nice warm motherly presence in the film and I quite liked that scene where her character rebukes the protagonist. It was both heartbreaking and absolutely hilarious.
I did like her in Marriage Story and she was deserving of a nomination. But Awkwafina, Lupita Nyong’o, Saoirse Ronan and Renee Zellweger all gave stronger performances. Jessie Buckley too but she obviously stood no chance with American awards groups lol. I felt like Johansson was also overshadowed by Driver.

She was probably third with how loved Jojo was. And probably 2nd by the time Oscar voting came around.
Only her, Dern and Robbie got in both SAG and BAFTA.
ReplyCopy URLApril 5, 2021 at 9:44 pm #1204181042Her performance in Marriage Story doesn’t really have that much substance or nuance. It just feels static throughout the film.
I don’t really care for Jojo Rabbit but she really elevated the film. I think the maternal role and comedic elements of her character lend itself well for Scarjo. She’s playful and eccentric. Not all actresses can pull off comedic elements and could have messed up the scene where she pretends to be Jojo’s father.

April 5, 2021 at 9:58 pm #1204181051I’m on the minority to think she deserved for Marriage Story more than Jojo Rabbit. She didn’t do anything special in the later imo, but she was great in the former. I vastly disagree that she was overshadowed by Driver. I rewatched MS recently and her monologue when she meets the lawyer simply disproves that. Scarlett and Driver were equally great for me.
I don’t think she deserved to be double nominated and I’d easily pick MS over Jojo Rabbit.
ReplyCopy URLApril 5, 2021 at 10:05 pm #1204181059Should have won for Jojo Rabbit instead of Dern’s NOTHING performance/PR’d career award and she did not take J.Lo’s spot that was Kathy Bates (and Florence Pugh sadly took Zhao Shuzhen’s spot)

I agree. Deserved nod for MARRIAGE STORY. Was great in Jojo but her and Kathy Bates were wastes of nominations that could’ve been given to the superior Asian performances that year from Zhao Shuzhen (The Farewell) and Cho Yeo-Jeong (Parasite) or honestly any other actress from that film too.
ReplyCopy URLApril 5, 2021 at 10:21 pm #1204181071I love her buy I would have not nominated her for that cartoonist performance in Jojo Rabbit.
ReplyCopy URLApril 5, 2021 at 10:35 pm #1204181079Im always of the opinion if an actor/actress aint gonna win then dont double nominate them. I know its a stupid opinion but still
ReplyCopy URLApril 5, 2021 at 10:57 pm #1204181099Only for “Marriage Story,” where I thought she was win-worthy. She should be at least on her third nomination by now with standout roles in “Lost in Translation,” “Girl with a Pearl Earring,” “Match Point,” & “Her.” Lopez should have replaced any of those nominees and won the Oscar for “Hustlers.” “Jojo Rabbit” is an awful film.

she was my favourite in both categories! 🤡

April 6, 2021 at 1:51 am #1204181224I thought Laura Dern was the worst of the nominees. I remember being baffled by how she single handedly swept the entire season. The point is that she even won some critics awards like NYFCC. Highly undeserved in my opinion, as much as I love Laura. I cannot understand what is so special about her performance.
