My bets are on Jojo Rabbit. Every year since 2012 the People’s Choice winner at TIFF has won at least either an acting or screenplay award. Jojo Rabbit won’t win any acting awards, so screenplay seems like a strong bet. Plus, its script is the type the academy likes to reward nowadays: bold, but still sentimental and crowdpleasing.

If that happens I hope it translates to more votes as Director, or film.
The demographic of voters means that many of them remember the kind and sweet Sharon Tate, and her friends. That won’t hurt it’s chances

ORIGINAL:
The Farewell – Lulu Wang
Knives Out – Rian Johnson
Marriage Story – Noah Baumbach
Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood – Quentin Tarantino
Parasite – Bong Joon-ho & Han Jin-wonKnives Out is the most vulnerable here. I can see it being replaced with Pain and Glory or Booksmart perhaps if critics will start to push it.

October 7, 2019 at 6:48 pm #1203126800I’m surprised at how many people have Knives Out in Original Screenplay. I though that would be a risky pick on my part, but maybe not.

Best Adapted Screenplay: The Midnight SkyOctober 7, 2019 at 7:12 pm #1203126831having seen knives out, it has one of the funniest, tightest screenplays of the year (some wish it had been a little more subtle with its themes but subtlety doesn’t really go with this film) and would be a lock if it gets a good box office run

November 2, 2019 at 10:38 am #1203163088As an amateur screenwriter, I was disappointed about the lack of discussion about the two screenplay awards. Along with Director, you can always find the best picture winner among the winners of each screenplay and director. I’ll get the ball rolling.
Original: Marriage Story (Winner), Parasite, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, The Farewell, and Bombshell
Adapted: Little Women (Winner), The Irishman, Jojo Rabbit, A Beautiful Day in the Neighbourhood, Joker.
Marriage Story will best both Parasite and Hollywood in screenplay, unless Bombshell emerges as a competitor. Tarantino’s already been rewarded plenty, and Marriage Story will be Baumbach’s prize in exchange for Greta being given a best director nom in his place.
I might be wrong, but my gut tells me that Greta Gerwig will take an Oscar for LW’s script. Scorsese takes all the attention for Irishman, rather than screenplay, and Jojo Rabbit and Joker are non contenders (Joker being lucky do be nominated). Neighbourhood, doubly so.
This will clear the path for picture into a fight among Marriage Story, Little Women, and whatever wins Director. (Bong or Scorsese, with Mendes as a dark horse, with my money on Scorsese).
