Haven’t seen Little Women yet, but I’ve heard great things about how Greta Gerwig uses the source material to honor both the novel AND the life of Louisa May Alcott herself. Even if Little Women really underperforms I think she’ll make it in regardless. If Little Women does great, she could actually win.

    Praying for Greta and Noah.

    what a power couple!

I will be very disappointed if OUATIH gets original screenplay as a consolation prize if it doesn’t win director or picture. Marriage Story’s script is far superior.

Two screenplays I hope get major nominations from this year are Honey Boy, Shia Lebeouf’s surprising touching emotional look at his relationship with his stage father; and the adapted screenplay for Luce, an extremely thought-provoking, intelligent and exceptional script – Luce has a far superior script to Jojo Rabbit, The Irishman and Joker. (Haven’t seen the other frontrunners yet: Little Women, A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood, and The Two Popes). Honey Boy has a far better script than the execrable Once Upon a Time in Hollywood and Booksmart – and is every bit as good as Marriage Story and Parasite (haven’t seen Bombshell or 1917 or Uncut Gems yet)…

This is a difficult category for me. I still have MS winning screenplay, not because I think it’s better. OUATIH in my opinion is still the superior screenplay, because it goes into all kinds of directions in different scenarios and comes together as a cathartic experience. Parasite’s screenplay is a near masterpiece also superior in my opinion for many of the same reasons as Hollywood. And I cant imagine Irishman’s script by Zaillian being a load of crap, and also more expansive than MS. I’m sticking with MS for now because it’s a nice consolation prize for a film that could be competitive for BP but wont win. And blanking it seems preposterous. There’s the possibility for another screenplay under the radar so I’m keeping my eyes wide open for that surprise, should it happen. MS’s focus is very narrow. Most of the others aren’t.
And I still feel strongly, that the white guilt spot has been assigned to Bong Jun-ho. So screenplay doesn’t win.
So I look at it as the worthy alternative. And if I say that it’s a nice pairing with Dern when Driver loses, it makes the most sense to me atm.

Lol. I tried to be as inoffensive as possible. But not very hard.

    Original: Marriage Story

    Adapted: JoJo Rabbit

This will be awful in my opinion.
It’s one of those years that, at least in my view, there’s an absolute superior screenplay in both categories- which are Tarantino’s and Zaillian’s.

I understand it’s much more likely JoJo and Marriage Story will win eventually- it’s the Oscars after all

Wow that reminds me of the disaster awaiting Bates at SAG. Hopefully we dont even get screeners so that will be the excuse.

Which is why it’s the other way around.

It’s Hollywood and Irishman. Not JoJo and MS. Of course my crystal ball needs an oil change but this is what i meant. Sorry to be so late answering but I think I found that tenth film from 1898 MY decade list and saw this.

Not like it’s a contender, but why is After the Wedding going Original? It’s based on a Scandanavian film by Susanne Bier.

After seeing Knives Out, I can definitely say it deserves to be nominated and I think it will be. It’s the kind of screenplay that’s likely gonna get a lot of passion votes.

Right now, my prediction for screenplays are:

    Original
    1. Marriage Story
    2. Parasite
    3. The Farewell
    4. Once Upon a Time in Hollywood
    5. Knives Out

    Adapted
    1. Jojo Rabbit
    2. Little Women
    3. The Irishman
    4. The Two Popes
    5. Toy Story 4

It seems to me that that Once Upon a Time in Hollywood’s chances of winning here keep getting worse as time goes on. I’m sure it’ll get nominated, but after that, I think it comes in last place (I have this ranked by the likeliness of nominations, although I expect the ranking to be fairly similar when it comes to the winning votes). There’s currently quite a few other contenders who have been better better notices, such as Marriage Story, Parasite, The Farewell, Knives Out, Booksmart, Pain and Glory. Meanwhile, OUATIH’s script is its most criticized aspect. It’s been mostly well received, but it’s had some noticeable criticisms being leveled against it, such as the underutilization of the heavily advertised Sharon Tate and Charles Manson, the historically inaccurate characterization of Bruce Lee, and the general lack of a narrative despite such a lengthy runtime (that last one doesn’t bother me). Compared to the other contenders I mentioned, Tarantino’s script seems to have less universal praise, and I believe that’ll ruin its chances of a win.
