Well, The Thin Red Line blew the rest of the nominees that year out of the water, so… neither?

Saving Private Ryan is overrated. Shakespeare in Love gets some unnecessary flak but it isn’t that good either tbh.

I’m not a huge fan of Shakespeare in Love but I don’t think it robbed Private Ryan, the criminally snubbed Truman Show, The Thin Red Line, and Gods and Monsters were all superior films and yet I’ve never felt it was a travesty that Shakespeare prevailed. I still remain pressed that it won two acting awards, though.

Saving Private Ryan is beyond overrated. But it’s not like there was much of a choice outside of SIL since they were all war movies anyone could get behind. Oh my god, I just realized I’ve watched Life is Beautiful before in middle school and that’s what Benigni won for, and I’ve got to say: like how?

Also got banned because...reasons? So, I guess ciao.

Its ultimately what you prefer. I like Ryan more than Shakespeare but I didnt hate Shakespeare like most people did. I just like the other one more.

Why was there so much outrage about this? I don’t get it tbh.

Also, poor Gwyneth. Probably the most hated oscar win of all time.

They’re both overrated but I don’t think Shakespeare winning was that bad tbh.

Gwyneth on the other hand did not deserve anything for her glorified Disney Princess performance. The worst Best Actress win in history

What is with all you Shakespeare In Love defenders? While it’s a good movie, it’s absolute BULLCRAP that it won over Saving Private Ryan. Saving Private Ryan is one of the most moving films I’ve ever seen, and it literally redefined how World War II movies, and war movies in general are made. This year in particular will mark the 75th anniversary of D-Day.

Both Gwyneth and the Best Picture win were good wins. It’s one of my favourite films. Fiennes probably deserved a nomination too (he got in at SAG and BAFTA).

Not only was SIL a better movie it also was better directed than SPR (a film that i like a lot)

The Oscar needs to get rid of the preferential ballot so it can name a deserving movie as Best Picture again.

Fernanda Montenegro for Central Do Brasil should had won instead, Cate Blanchett was also better than GP
