But was Montenegro wrong? Paltrow may have had some sort of talent and quality of performance to back up the win, but is that why she won? No, and we all know that, and Montenegro pointed that out.

I kind of disagree. Back then Paltrow was considered an up and coming major talent. She had Emma and Sliding Doors as acclaimed lead roles plus a bunch of films (Flesh and Bones, Moonlight and Valentino, Hard Eight) where she had supporting roles but stole the film and got the best reviews. So by the time of Shakespeare in Love it seemed like they were awarding someone who’d be a major actress. If you look back on her career now with all the goop stuff it makes the Oscar win seem odd but back then it seemed logical.

Montenegro didn’t even get nominated at SAG so I don’t think she was in play at all.

I believe she said “the oscar goes to the blondes”. She knew the race was Paltrow vs Blanchett (both hot young english speaking it girls). And that what she was pointing out. The academy likes to reward ingenue actresses.

Something everybody here discusses and agrees with the likes of Paltrow, Roberts, Witherspoon, Lawrence, Stone. Even if they gave quality performances but the reason they get to the stage “so easily” is clear.

Also, Fernanda Montenegro is class itself with pure intelligence but I understand you’re seeing her as a sore loser by those statements.

Paltrow did not deserve that win and I rarely say that about nominations or wins. Her performance was underwhelming
