Realized I should have started this earlier than about 8 hours before nominations are announced, but who do you have predicted for the shorts? Since they’re typically the films the least people have seen, who do you have for animated, live action, and documentary short nominations and why?

About time. For Animated Shorts I have Hair Love, Kitbull, The Physics of Sorrow, Hors Pirste and Sister, for Documentary Short I have Learning to Skateboard in a Warzone, Fire in Paradise, Stay Close, St. Louis Superman and Life Overtakes Me, and for Live Action Short I have Brotherhood, Little Hands, Refugee, Miller and Son and Saria. I know I’m probably going to be wrong on at least half of these based on principle and I made a point to pick some against-the-grain choices also on principle. I don’t even watch most of the shorts, even though I arguably should.

The former is accessible enough to win and the latter sounds baity, but is actually just a premise as opposed to a story with an ending. Working my way through animated now.

Animated
Hair Love
Kitbull
Physics of Sorrow
Hors Piste
DceraI struggled a bit with the 5th spot and just decided to predict what I was able to see.
-
Doc Short
Learning to Skateboard
Fire in Paradise
Stay Close
In the Absence
St. Louis SupermanI saw most of these. In the Absence made me so angry and sad. I think it is a good 100/1 bet. For 5th spot, couldnt decide between Superman or Nightcrawlers and since I havent found a way to see Superman, I actually decided to predict that because narrative sounds off the charts from synopsis. Nightcrawlers doesnt quite stick the landing.

Live Action
Brotherhood
Refugee
Little Hands
Neighbors window
Nefta Football ClubAnother one that is tough to predict since I couldnt see them all. Refugee and Little Hands from trailers look to have best production value of them all. I desperately wanted neighbor’s window to be bad so I could put in a sleeper but it was great. And Nefta was the light one of the bunch. Look out for “sometimes I think about dying” though. I really wanted to fit that one in but had no room.

Animated
Dcera (Daughter)
Hair Love

The Physics of SorrowDocumentary
Fire in Paradise
Learning to Skateboard in a Warzone (If You’re a Girl)
Life Overtakes Me
The Nightcrawlers
St. Louis SupermanLive Action
Brotherhood
Miller & Son
The Neighbor’s Window
Refugee
A SisterOnly seen two of the animated shorts and had to make do with trailers for the rest, so this is a crapshoot as usual.
ReplyCopy URLJanuary 13, 2020 at 4:59 am #1203279130ANIMATED
Dcera (Daughter)
Hair Love
Hors Piste
Kitbull
Sister– They usually put a one or two cute animal shorts(Kitbull), something emotional about family, usually a sick or dead parent (Hair Love), a comedic one (Hors Piste), and something that’s stop motion (Sister) in this category. I didn’t see Dcera, but it just looked interesting.
DOC SHORT
After Maria
Fire in Paradise
In the Absence
Learning to Skateboard
The Nightcrawlers– A couple of these deal with natural disasters partially caused by human behavior (After Maria, Fire in Paradise) that would be very timely. They’re also both Netflix. In the Absence and The Nightcrawlers are both “foreign” documentaries about bad governments and they’re also easily accessible. I haven’t seen Learning to Skateboard, but it reminds me of last year’s winner, Period. End of Sentence. It also seems light-hearted.
LIVE-ACTION SHORT
Brotherhood
Miller & Son
Nefta Football Club
The Neighbor’s Window
Saria– After last year’s slew of depressing shorts about kids being involved in or committing atrocities, I wanted to nominate more light-hearted things. Because of this, Nefta Football Club and The Neighbor’s Window feel like locks. Brotherhood and Miller & Son are more serious but they’re also topical. I also saw Little Hands, but didn’t enjoy the storytelling that much, and Sometimes I Feel Like Dying was too much of a slog to sit through and felt like I was watching a feature-length film.
