Having a just listened to This Had Oscar Buzz’s “Rent” episode and watching the film for the first time in years.

I couldn’t but wonder, since Spielberg is remaking West Side Story, should Rent be given another chance?

At one point in the original production Spike Lee was attached to direct which I think would’ve worked better than Colombus since he knows how to handle music-oriented films (“Good Hair” from School Daze is one of the best music sequences ever put to screen, imo).

If someone like him or another director that knows music like Melina Matsoukas, Thomas Kail or Janet Mock and a young cast who actually want to be involved in the project / have any enthusiasm on screen (Dawson & Thoms on screen seemed like the ones who knew a camera was filming)

After the disastrous live attempt on Fox, isn’t it about time one of the best theatrical shows gets a screen adaption worthy of itself?

One word will answer this question and that is no.

This would be similar to the three attempts of doing Beyonce on the Snatch Game on RuPaul’s Drag Race – No, No and No

I quite unironically loved whatever kenya was doing in that snatch game, whether that had anything to do with beyonce is another story

When Rent came out I was shocked at how much critics attacked the original musical! So it’s not just that the director was mismatched but the material wasn’t comsidered top tier. That said I don’t think anyone could be better then Rosario Dawson was. I was very glad to see her win an award even if it was only a satellite and get an image award nomination. She was so great. If everyone even the original cast had been as good as she was it would have been better. Ranking the cast the top two were not original cast. Thoms was in the show but not OC

There’s been 7 Batman’s & 4 A Star Is Born’s and at least half of each of those range from meh to outright terrible.

It’s been almost 15 years it’s the first film and if a second attempt doesn’t work then alright, let dying dogs rest.

With solid creative team, cast & mid-budget it could be more Scarface / Dark Knight / Cape Fear than Arthur / Mummy / Psycho

That’s why I love the Satellite’s, I know most people see them as a joke but their definitely more ballsy in the choices than the majority of the awarding bodies.

I think the film gets a lot of flack and there really isn’t that good of a reason why- sure the cast is a bit mature for the roles but I personally didn’t mind that at all. They were fantastic to me. No remake!

Sure. No material is sacred. I’d say wait a couple more years though, since the bitter aftertaste of the television version is still palpable. Find the right talent on and off-camera, and get an age-appropriate ensemble this time.

Why? Neither the film adaptation nor the live telecast were considered successful. Just let the property stay in theatre circles, where it is most appreciated.

As curious as I am to see an actually good adaptation of this piece, probably by somebody who understands New York of that era and the characters better, I don’t think it’s really “worth it” to remake again. The material is really dated even in theatre circles, and I think the whole whining artists thing wouldn’t be appreciated today. In the film, the only “real” part I liked was when the homeless woman was getting harassed by the NYPD and Mark was filming it and then the homeless woman saw him and started taking him to task for doing so. The rest of it just didn’t hit a chord with general audiences in 2005, and it definitely won’t in 2019 where it seems that the characters who are “suffering” for their art seem to be mostly harassing working class people. It takes a lot for me to be sympathetic to the “villain” who really was pushing people out of neighborhoods, but this movie did it. I don’t know if it was the directing or what, some how Taye Diggs’ character became the most sympathetic one for me as he for some reason kept hanging around people, whom were at first benefiting from him giving them a place to live for free (though he was still a slum lord), who just ganged up on him for moving on financially. Although he was the most sympathetic, he wasn’t really sympathetic to me since he took part in blackmail and turning Manhattan to what it is now. Which says a lot about how I view the other characters.

I actually thought FOX’s recent (partially) live telecast was quite good. In fact, one of my favorite parts of it was how ‘Seasons of Love’ was incorporated into the plot. If another film adaptation were to be made, I would like that number staged in a similar fashion.

I don´t know what Rent is but I voted no because we don´t need more remakes, we already have more than we should.

Rent is one of the musicals that translated to film a lot bettter than some others have tried. I would rather watch the movie on repeat that to sit through a production in person. I love the music, but the story isn’t as great as people make it out to be. If they are worried about their lights and health, then they should get a job, precious snowflakes.

No, this is one remake we don’t need. The material was dated in 2005 as it was. I honestly think it was a movie they waited too long to adapt to film; and both the material got too old and the cast too old.
