I’ve been having thoughts on those actors who could have had multiple Oscar nods in a single category. Nicole Kidman in 2001 comes.
Do you guys think this should be allowed and who would have made a great double nominee within the same year in the same category?
ReplyMarch 5, 2023 at 1:54 pm #1205333309I’m more on the “no” side, however, I do like when award bodies nominate people for their whole year of performances, like Isabelle Huppert for Elle and Things To Come.

I believe Oscars were given to performers for multiple roles.

There may have been others but they were nommed in lead and supporting.
Sounds fine to me.ReplyCopy URLThe Sunne in Splendour.
I prefer my roses whiteMarch 5, 2023 at 3:18 pm #1205333348It already is allowed outside of acting categories, such as Hurwitz/Pasek/Paul getting two Original Song nominations for La La Land, Desplat being nominated for both Budapest and Imitation Game, and Soderbergh being nominated for both Traffic and Erin Brockovich.
ReplyCopy URLMarch 5, 2023 at 3:49 pm #1205333374I find it very weird that you can have multiple nominations in every category but the acting ones. It should be either in all or in none.
I personally think that, if you have enough votes, be nominated the number of time you deserve, but I’m ok with no double nominates, if it aplicable to all categories equal.

This I did not know.

the most obvious double nominee this century would be kate winslet for reader/revolutionary road.
ReplyCopy URLMarch 5, 2023 at 4:35 pm #1205333397The practical impact would be that it would hurt an actor’s chances of winning for either performance in a category because he or she would split votes with him or herself. I would think that actors would oppose this change.
ReplyCopy URLMarch 5, 2023 at 4:42 pm #1205333406Yes and no. I think they should allow 1 nomination for multiple works.
Example: Emily Blunt in Best Actress(2019) for Mary Poppins and A Quiet Place.
Laura Dern in Supporting Actress(2020) for Marriage Story and Little Women. That could shake things up a little. The same person getting double nominations, on the other hand, is counterproductive: it would probably split the votes and the person would be in trouble. Besides, in theory, the person would have an advantage over the other nominees, so I’m against it and understand why it’s not allowed.

I just think if this is the case, then there should be a restriction on multiple nominations in all categories. My main issue is that because of the current rules, lead/supporting distinctions get manipulated so that the actor can still get nominated for both roles.

I thought about Kate, but than I thought about her competition. That was a group of Superb nominees.

That could work. They’d just have to change the title of the awards. It would have to simply be…
Best Leading Actress
Best Supporting ActressThey’d have to take out “Leading Performance”

Lead Sag Nom + Lead Bafta Nom + Lead Globe Win. She was probably 2 of the top 3.

Winslet in Revolutionary Road would have knocked out Leo or Jolie. She got GG,SAG and BAFTA noms for the role and won GG. She was absolutely getting in had there been no The Reader.
