On the heels of the Oscars announcement of their new category of “Most Popular Film.” I want to know what all of you think about this. In the same manner, that Primetime Emmys, Golden Globes, SAG Awards, split their categories by genre, comedy and drama, should the Oscars follow the same suit? Make it be something like “Academy Award for Best Dramatic Picture”  and “Academy Award for Best Comedic Picture,” and the acting categories would be split in the same way?

By following a bit of the Oscars past winners and nominations, there always seem to be a bias for dramatic performances. It appears that comedic performances are rarely awarded. Critically acclaimed films such as “Girls Trip” were not able to get some honors because of that bias.  Therefore, do you believe by making such a change, more films (especially comedic-themed ones) could get some love? Or should it merely stay the same, and we should only award the quality of the film, and its performances, no matter if it is comedic or dramatic?

I want to know your opinions. To be honest, I am mixed.

No, because then we’ll get all sorts of blatant category frauds like the Globes, where more often than not Comedy picture becomes a secondary BP award. Also, what about the drama-comedy hybrids? I don’t trust the industry to make a distinction between the 2 genres overall, but especially not for those films that are really on the line.

Note to myself: Don’t ever feed the trolls. Don’t get involved in others drama. Don’t let myself be swayed by others predictions, trust my gut more often!

Note to all others: If you don’t happen to like me, ignore me. It is that simple.

I say no. I think there would be more instances of films like The Martian or Get out being labeled a “comedy”. Besides, if the “Most Popular” category does work out for the better, than this is where comedies will likely get their due.

If they don’t respect films that are popular JUST because they are well like then yes. NEWSFLASH if lots of people LOVED a film it means it good if they are stilll making memes about it (Infinity war) it’s good why do films no one has seen get soooooo much undeserved credit and respect. They aren’t better just cause old white men said so

This would just discredit comedies even more than they already are and officially turn the Oscars into the more boring golden globes which are a joke.

I understand the beliefs of all the above users.

But I don’t know, I always appreciate the move that the Golden Globes do, since they seem to understand that you can’t really compare a comedic and dramatic actress. Their performances involve different dynamics, and it is always human to be more moved by an emotional performance rather than one that is hilarious.

Thus, the reasoning why dramatic performances are always nominated and awarded, and comedic performances rarely do, even those funny films do as well in the Box Office than those drama themed.

@Teridax that’s a great question. It reminds me of when Golden Globes considered “The Martian” as a comedy when most knew that was not the case. Honestly, I always find that films that are both comedic and dramatic; it always more than the other, such as it is can be 80% dramatic,  20% comedic and most directors would know which category they would prefer their film to be placed in.

Well then comedy actors and actresses should aspire to get a golden globe and a drama actor or actress should aspire to get an oscar. It´d be really boring to have two best actresses, two best pictures, two best actors of the year imo.

I figure comedy, musical, animated, drama and super hero flicks will all be included in the most popular category. Could a movie like Titanic, LOTR, or Chicago win both.

    1. No.

    2. Comedy films will not get their due in the Popular Category. I suppose this “award” will to a mega hit and comedies are not doing that since the days of Bridesmaids or The Hangover (I think). So this will end up going to things like Get Out, since I hope they at least take quality into consideration, besides money. A Quiet Place, Black Panther, Dunkirk, Dark Knight type films. Comedies aren’t working out very well in recent years.

No. The uproar over the Popular Film category would be the same for a change like this. The Oscars exist to honor the best in film. Period. No qualifiers. That defeats the purpose.

A movie like Titanic and Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King could and I am convinced would easily have won both categories.
