I know I know we all are seeking bigger repercussions for Will, but the fact that his career will always be tainted by one mistake of his – is a punishment in itself. I am angry and equally feel bad for him. He made the right decision by resigning and I hope people can heal, and move on.

This discourse has become exhausting and stale.

In my opinion, the Academy should revise its rules to where specific individuals can be rendered temporarily or permanently ineligible for future Oscar consideration. If it were up to me, I would push for such sanctions under the following circumstances: 1) The individual was an active participant in a conspiracy to have someone admitted as a member of the Academy under false pretenses. 2) The individual was an active participant in a conspiracy to have a film become eligible for Oscar consideration under false pretenses. 3) The individual was an active participant in a conspiracy to undermine the Oscar voting process or otherwise bring it into disrepute. 4) The individual knowingly and willfully disrupted, undermined, or otherwise brought into disrepute any Academy-hosted event, including the Oscar ceremony itself. 5) The individual knowingly and willfully engaged in any form of abuse, discrimination, or harassment in the workplace. 6) The individual was convicted of a felony. 7) The individual was on the losing side of any civil or criminal case directly concerning either the Academy itself or one of its members. 8) The individual was involved in a conspiracy to circumvent an existing ban. * The bans can be retroactive, and if the individual was nominated for or won any Oscars during the retroactive ban period, those nominations/wins would be revoked.

What the hell? This is peak USA, the country that doesn’t let current or even former felons vote in elections.

LMAO get over yourself. You’re a nobody and have no insight about whether he will be nominated again.

It wasn’t his stans but his peers in the industry that gave him two standing ovations (when he won and again after his speech), some even rushed over to console him. However, they will stay quiet for now until the heat dies down. Even Mel Gibson was nominated again and even on Will’s worst day, he is 100x the man Gibson is and always will be.

He made one mistake in a 30 year career, and apologized right away and even resigned from the academy. We love nothing more than a redemption arc and it’s coming. The public is already on his side saying this outrage is over-the-top and others have gotten away with worse, and it didn’t even take a week🤣 In a year, he’ll become a hero and get a standing ovation at whatever big event he decides to show up at. I know I will be first in line to watch I Am Legend 2 and it will be a blockbuster and he’ll be back. You think casual fans in China or Japan give a rat’s ass about Will slapping Chris? Nobody will be upset about this a year from now when they’re already sick of it and back on his side within a week. Keep dreaming though.

And who are you?? Sit down, you annoying stan. No one should have to endure another season of seeing his smug face so soon.

Given the standards I laid out above, here’s my personal opinion on what should be done regarding not just Smith but also the aforementioned expelled Academy members. 1) Since Carmine Caridi is now deceased and has no Oscar nominations to his name, nothing should be done regarding him. The rest should be rendered ineligible for Oscar consideration for appropriate periods of time. 2) Smith should have his Oscar revoked, given that his behavior occurred before he was formally awarded. 3) Harvey Weinstein should have all of his Oscar nominations/wins revoked. 4) Roman Polanski should have his nominations/wins for Tess and The Pianist revoked. The Academy should also consider revoking his nomination for Chinatown if the more recent allegations about him engaging in pedophilia as early as 1972 are substantiated. 5) As a bonus, Matt Damon should have all of his post-Good Will Hunting nominations revoked for his involvement in the media suppression the Weinstein scandal. He should also be banned from future Oscar consideration for an appropriate period of time. 6) As a further bonus, Russell Crowe should also be banned from future Oscar consideration for an appropriate period of time, for the same reason as Damon.

Good God, are you finished? Because in the vast array of moral transgressions committed by past nominees and winners, somehow I doubt you’ve covered it, but you have opened a can of worms.

My stance is the extreme opposite to yours: nominations for specific films, performances and achievements are completely impersonal, or at least ought to be. I see individual nominations as belonging entirely outside the moral sphere, meaning that no offense should be enough to disqualify someone from consideration. Nope, not even a murder charge (although in that case the nominee in question would of course be persona non grata from the ceremony, and I can understand that many would be loathe to vote for said person). Disciplinary measures by the Academy should concern membership or at worst fines if there’s some sort of legal dispute. But banning individuals from nominations or wins disrespects the rights of members to vote for whomever they deem most worthy, while rescinding past nominations and wins is censorious, ahistorical, and achieves absolutely nothing.

We need to get rid of this thread………..It’s STUPID and so are some of you on this board.

Will won it fair and square. He could have handled himself better but he was defending his wife and got caught up in the moment.

If you want to delete your own opinions that’s up to you, but I don’t think you should decide to get rid of everybody else’s comments and opinions by seeking the removal of this thread.

You phrase and praise Will’s actions as “defending his wife”. When did the violence of toxic masculinity become a good thing?

Sorry, but The Academy shouldn’t have even given Polanski and Oscar. The fact some members here want Smith’s Oscar revoked because of a slap, shows their true colors. I bet you didn’t have that outraged when Polanski raped children. Now suddenly he should get his Oscar revoked just to teach Smith a lesson.

As old as my post was, it’s amazing you scroll through this thread and didn’t like what I posted and decided to FINALLY put your two cents on this.  I’ve moved on and got BETTER things to think about.  What’s going on in Ukraine is really what she should be worrying about

People want Will Smith to have his Oscar taken away when most of their faves were shaking hands with Weinstein, or defending pervy Woody Allen.

Him resigning from the Academy is a publicist move. It does nothing. He can still be nominated again and win again. His wife is still a member, and what has Lady Macbeth done to be in it?

Listen, if this incident would have occurred before voting ended, he would have lost. Remember Russell Crowe was winning everything for A Beautiful Mind, then threw a phonebook at someone and lost the Oscar to Denzel for Training Day?

That you’re amazed that someone should read through this current and popular thread shows that you’re easily amazed. Your post is what – a few days ‘old’? Is that what counts as old now?!

Yeah, you’re posting on a Gold Derby thread, a movie site, about the Will Smith incident, and with your desire for this thread to be erased not having been realised, you’re now wanting to talk about Ukraine.

Why don’t you start a thread about it, about Ukraine?

I don’t know how you manage on this forum with all of its recurring concerns about whether Driving Miss Daisy, or Crash, or CODA, or whatever were ‘worthy’ winners of Oscar’s Best Picture, or with all of the other recurring concerns about films and awards that fill this forum.

Do you simply move on from them, too, while expressing your concern about “real” issues like Russia-Ukraine, Israel-Palestine, Yemen, South Sudan, etc?

    I doubt you do…

Smith is the first person to be caught in a violent act on live television on Academy property. His case is unique. His crime is undeniable and happened on the Academy’s watch. Assault is assault, be it on the bus home by some drunk or a privileged celebrity on stage. Nobody wants the Oscar revoked, just the criminal to be punished as anyone else would for the same. I’m not sure why the stans are being so defensive, we all know his popularity and wealth will secure him the bare minimum if anything…and he knows he is guilty hence the remorseful statements.
