This is my first topic so please be nice to me. “Silent Killers” is the name I used in college for film class when ever I would write a review for the films we watched in class. Can’t say I invented the term but I was the first in my class to use that term. A “silent killer” performance is simply an outstanding performance that aren’t “loud.” Most “silent killers” do not include dramatic make-up or costume changes but some do. Tell me what performances you guys would consider “silent killers.” I know many will disagree with the term or some performances I consider “silent killers” but here are some Ive selected.

    • Javier Bardem (No Country for Old Men)
    • Sean Young (Blade Runner)
    • Pat Morita (The Karate Kid)
    • Whoopi Goldber (The Colo Purple)
    • Jodie Foster (Slience of The Lambs)
    • Willem Dafoe (Shadow of the Vampire) *****
    • Jim Caviezel (The Passion of the Christ)
    • Will Sampson (One Flew Over Cuckoo’s Nest)
    • Gabourey Sidibe (Precious)
    • Helen Mirren (Queen)
    • Gregory Peck (To Kill a Mockingbird)
    • Adrian Brody (The Painist)
    • Heather Matarazzo (Welcome To the Dollhouse)
    • Jean Reno (Leon: The Professional)
    • Natalie Portman (Leon: The Professional)

    Many more to come!!!

Casey Affleck, ‘The Assassination of Jesse James’. This is one of my favorite performances of all time, and I think it fits the description you gave. Affleck’s Robert Ford is the young one who takes shit from most of the characters throughout the film, and the way that Affleck displays his infatuation with Jesse James (Brad Pitt) to his obsession, and ultimately to his jealously of him, I think it’s a masterclass of underplaying and truly inhabiting a character’s skin. And he doesn’t really have a lot of “loud” or “big” moments; it’s the quieter moments where he watches and observes the other characters that are some of his very best scenes. I would actually say the same of his work in ‘Gone Baby Gone’, ‘The Killer Inside Me’, and ‘Out of the Furnace’, three more amazing performances that demonstrate what an underrated talent he is. He doesn’t rely on histrionics.

^While I’m at it, let me go ahead and add his terrific work in ‘Ain’t Them Bodies Saints’ and even ‘Interstellar’ to that list. Man, I love him.

Casey Affleck is insanely talented. Although his brother Ben did a great job in Gone Girl, I still think Casey would do a better job since he’d look younger than Rosamund and therefore would accentuate her character’s dominance (like it i in the books). And he’s a much better actor generally speaking.

Here are some examples of silent killers:

    • Jane Alexander in Kramer vs. Kramer
    • Amy Adams in American Hustle
    • Katharine Ross in The Graduate
    • ROSAMUND PIKE in Gone Girl

Chishu Ryu, Chieko Higashiyama & Setsuko Hara in Tokyo Story
    Peter Sellers in Being There
    Vanessa Redgrave in Wetherby
Richard Farnsworth in The Straight Story
Ulrich Mühe in The Lives of Others
Jesse Eisenberg in The Social Network
    Jacki Weaver in Animal Kingdom
Gary Oldman in Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy
    Amy Adams in The Master

I personally disagree with Rosamund Pike being a silent killer in Gone Girl due to the transformative nature of the role (she repeatedly gained and lost weight to portray Amy as well as Nancy throughout filming) and just portraying so many different versions of the same person (Amy) as well as a completely different identity (Nancy). Totally agree about Amy Adams in American Hustle, though. That’s a great example.
