I always found it shocking that The First Wives’ Club was given the cold shoulder by the HFPA as it’s like the quintessential 1990s comedy.

Among recent examples, Johnny Depp from The Rum Diary is a surprising snub based on his double nomination of the previous year as it was a performance the HFPA would generally love.

What are the other egregious snubs?

Magic Mike in 2012. Warner Bros did run a campaign for it (mainly for McConaughey & Original Song), AMPAS were never gonna take it seriously as it’s snub appeal just wasn’t there / seen as only a “dumb stripper movie”. If any precursor was gonna go for it, it would’ve been the Globes.

Critically acclaimed film from star director, that’s a box office with a famous lead. The film (along with Tatum & McConaughey should’ve been locks) but I HFPA preferred Salmon Fishing more instead.

I was pretty shocked at The Big Sick getting shutout from the Globes.

Maybe not a real snub because they’ve been made ineligible, but I feel that many animated Disney/Pixar movies have deserved to get comedy picture nominations. Ratatouille, Toy Story 3, Inside Out, Zootopia, and Coco would’ve all been fantastic nominees. WALL-E and Up as well, but I’d actually put those in Drama.

The HFPA has also not been kind to teen-centered movies. Mean Girls, The Edge of Seventeen, Eighth Grade, and Booksmart all deserved nods for Picture along with their lead actresses. Kaitlyn Dever (who gave the best performance in the movie imo) also should’ve been nominated alongside Feldstein.

Good one, I wonder what happened there, I guess it was too quirky for the HFPA and went with more conventional stuff like The Greatest Showman.

Seth Rogen’s stuff are largely ignored as well for some reason.

I’ve never thought about that but you are quite right. It’s not only regarded as quintessential 90s comedy nowadays, it was already acclaimed when it came out. Plus, it starred Keaton, Midler and Hawn (who seem to be quite popular with the HFPA). AND the movie was actually great. I should re-visit this one. Oh, the nostalgia.

It has a scene where Goldie Hawn’s character talks of her own GG as “sacred” so it would have been quite fitting if she got in. Maybe the three ladies cancelled each other out since none of them could have been treated as supporting? Plus it was already a strong year with Fargo, Jerry Maguire, Evita & The Birdcage (haven’t seen Debbie Reynolds’ or Kevin Costner’s efforts yet).

    Big Night (1996)

Just checked out this one, Tucci definitely should have been in the best actor mix but I guess it was too “out there” for the HFPA…
