I understand that it’s a longshot in most of it’s categories, but any other year when we didn’t have such a heavy list of technical stories competing at once, I’m sure this one would have easily prevailed in categories like Sound and Visual Effects.
I currently have my big 500 bet for The Martian to win Sound-Editing. I think it’s of course, a whacked out prediction. But is it really going to just be Revenant and Mad Max all night? Star Wars still looms in those categories, and Scott’s movie IS a best picture nominee. Is it just bad luck that it’s being overshadowed, or can it win?

February 20, 2016 at 1:09 pm #217644If there’s a consolation prize for “The Martian,” I suspect it’s actually Adapted Screenplay, not any of the techs. If “The Big Short” for some curious reason completely fizzles with the Academy, I think it’s basically a jump ball among the other four contenders for that prize. I don’t see the film any higher than 4th in its tech categories.

Agreed. I don’t understand any of the hype from both the industry and the public. As far as space movies go, I found it very uninspired. I didn’t like Interstellar, but I thought it was much better than The Martian. Gravity is still my favorite of recent space films, though.

[/quote]I’d have to disagree. The Martian easily outstripped both Interstellar and Gravity in every department, from acting, writing, and directing to all the technical elements. A shame it will go 0-7.

He has, ‘almost’ the same narrative as Miller, which is both of their best chances for a win; and the film appeals to a broad scope of viewers. Nor does it seem like merely a ‘chase movie’ to those with limited vision or background.
Plus, he didnt freeze his little butt and nuts off did he.
I wouldnt mind seeing TM sneak in somewhere for a surprise win, but even psychic Gail doesnt think that anymore.

I thought it was a solid, if perhaps unexceptional piece of popcorn blockbuster entertainment. I actually enjoyed Damon more than I anticipated and thought all of the techs were decent. Where I thought it went a bit awry was in the humor department, which was ample and too often bordered on sitcom-level. Donald Glover’s spastic “comic” turn was among the year’s worst performances.
