This story looks very interesting with Lakeith Stanfield starring in his first major role as young telemarketer who is unsuccessful at his job and therefore has troubles in his private life too as he has to live in the garage. His fortune changes when he learns how to use his… white voice (the one that in real life belongs to David Cross).

It looks like another part when Stanfield gets to explore what it’s like to be African American in 2010s USA, after critical smashes – Oscar-winning “Get Out” and Emmy-winning “Atlanta” (currently in its 2nd season, including buzzy episode for Stanfield, too). Cast looks stellar and includes Tessa Thompson, Danny Glover, Patton Oswalt, Terry Crews and – stretching his image – Armie Hammer.

I love that it’s comedy rooted in science fiction which gives filmmakers some opportunities to do some truly interesting stuff. I love visual representation of dialogues between main character and his potential clients as he’s literally dropped with his desk inside their homes. Colors are eye-popping and bright which is a nice change. Reviews look really good after film’s premiere at the Sundance Film Festival so fingers crossed it will be more “Her” than “Downsizing”.

It’s written and directed by Boots Riley in his debut.

    Your thoughts?

One of my most anticipated movies of the year. It looks absolutely bonkers. Can’t wait

The ensemble is fantastic (Steve Yeun is another actor in the movie who wasn’t mentioned in the op)! I’m really glad Lakeith and Tessa will be getting their names out there even more into the public lexicon. And a coked-out, sarong-wearing Armie Hammer? Fantastic. Supposedly the trailer doesn’t even begin to broach the twists and turns this movie makes. I hope it catches on publicly and isn’t swamped out by Ant-Man and the Wasp which premieres the same day.

In this post-modern world anything that feels remotely fresh is automatically noteworthy and sometimes fascinating. That was the case, in different way of course, with films like “Her”, “The Lobster”, “Get Out” or Charlie Kaufman’s movies and Oscar took notice. What happens with this film, I don’t know, but I’m hopeful it will be a nice ride. Everything about it is promising.

Hoping this finds its audience during the domestic theatrical run.

I’m really excited for this movie. It will be nice to see Lakeith Stanfield play a solo leading role in a motion picture. After his acclaimed work in Short Term 12, Atlanta, and his short yet impactful role in Get Out (even making an Oscars cameo in reference to it) I’d say he’s earned this starring role. Plus, the premise is pretty unique, even though I’d be shocked if it had never been done before.

This is opening in select cities this weekend and going wide next weekend.

Currently sitting at 96% on RT with a 7.7 avg rating.

    Who’s seeing it?

I’m waiting for its wide release. Multiplex matinee is 10 dollars versus ArcLight’s 18.50 for all showings.

From the little I know from reviews and the trailer, I could see this being the token comedy film that sneaks into Original Screenplay

Any award season success this movie has will not be tokenism.

I saw it today. Its third act reveal will divide. Look for this movie being a contender in original screenplay.

I think it’ll get a couple of critic wins but I don’t see the Academy going for it, might be too eccentric for them even though it’d be a deserving nominee. Plus, Annapurna will most likely give Cheney and Destroyer the bigger push here.

Anyway, it made over 700k this past weekend in just 16 theatres! Not sure how many theatres it’ll be playing at as it goes wide this weekend but I hope it slays! Lotta buzz about it on social media so I hope people go see it.

I think the industry will embrace it in screenplay. It definitely is a cool kids’ movie.
