“According to Deadline, Carey Mulligan is set to star in the upcoming Adam Sandler sci-fi film, “Spaceman.” The film is based on Jaroslav Kalfar’s novel, “The Spaceman of Bohemia,” and tells the story of an astronaut sent to the farthest reaches of the galaxy in search of space dust. With his Earthly life falling to pieces, the astronaut turns to a stowaway alien that is the only being that can help him in his current predicament. In the film, Mulligan is expected to portray the wife of Sandler’s astronaut character. “Spaceman” comes from director Johan Renck (“Chernobyl“), with the screenplay written by Colby Day.”
This is a combo I never thought could happen…
ReplyApril 15, 2021 at 12:02 pm #1204202536I read that article and it doesn’t really sound like a comedy. Doesn’t sound like an Oscar movie, but it sounds more like Ad Astra or Interstellar than a typical Sandler movie. Plus, I don’t think Carey would want to do that type of movie, so I don’t think it’s a comedy

ReplyCopy URLApril 15, 2021 at 12:06 pm #1204202546Definitely not a move I expected Carey to make but it doesn’t sound like one of Sandler’s awful comedies. The director of Chernobyl being attached is promising. Carey also has great taste in scripts, so there has to be something there that would attract her to this. Anyway, I’m still looking forward to Maestro and Fingernails more but I hope this turns out to be a hit on Netflix.

“An intergalactic odyssey of love, ambition, and self-discovery.
Orphaned as a boy, raised in the Czech countryside by his doting grandparents, Jakub Prochv°zka has risen from small-time scientist to become the country’s first astronaut. When a dangerous solo mission to Venus offers him both the chance at heroism he’s dreamt of, and a way to atone for his father’s sins as a Communist informer, he ventures boldly into the vast unknown. But in so doing, he leaves behind his devoted wife, Lenka, whose love, he realizes too late, he has sacrificed on the altar of his ambitions.
Alone in Deep Space, Jakub discovers a possibly imaginary giant alien spider, who becomes his unlikely companion. Over philosophical conversations about the nature of love, life and death, and the deliciousness of bacon, the pair form an intense and emotional bond. Will it be enough to see Jakub through a clash with secret Russian rivals and return him safely to Earth for a second chance with Lenka?
Rich with warmth and suspense and surprise, Spaceman of Bohemia is an exuberant delight from start to finish. Very seldom has a novel this profound taken readers on a journey of such boundless entertainment and sheer fun.”
This definitely does not feel like a comedy. And the wife’s role seems to be quite small.
ReplyCopy URLApril 15, 2021 at 12:16 pm #1204202571Yeah I wouldn’t write this one off because Sandler is attached. Seems like one of the rare, more ambitious project choices for him. The book seems to have quite a lot of cinematic potential and looks to have been pretty well received. Looks like an interesting project to me.
ReplyCopy URLApril 15, 2021 at 12:39 pm #1204202606After “Uncut Gems,” I’m all in for Sandler’s next serious project. I won’t dismiss this outright for no good reason.
ReplyCopy URLApril 15, 2021 at 12:39 pm #1204202608Not everything with Adam Sandler is bad and considering this is the Director of Chernobyl, I don’t really understand the “Razzie nominee Carey Mulligan” or “Carey sweetie” comments. Carey has actually very good taste in movies and projects overall, so if she said yes then there’s something good or promising about this project.
ReplyCopy URLApril 15, 2021 at 1:08 pm #1204202668I said that the next time Adam does a serious role, he would get Oscar nominated.
Could this be it?

April 15, 2021 at 1:53 pm #1204202764The haters are just pressed lol.
I know some are definitely not haters, but I just find those comments a bit unnecessary.
ReplyCopy URLApril 15, 2021 at 4:01 pm #1204202990Sounds like 2001. Philosophy. It doesn’t sound Commercial. It sounds Kubrick or Paul Thomas Anderson.
ReplyCopy URLApril 15, 2021 at 9:50 pm #1204203182It honestly took me a while to get all the Razzie jokes, and I haven’t even seen Uncut Gems!
We’ll see how it goes. Sandra Bullock and Matt Damon have both been nominated for space movies so it’s not entirely out of reach for Adam Sandler to do the same, even if he’s not a previous nominee like them. Of course, this could also end up like The Midnight Sky and that one Noah Hawley-Natalie Portman movie whose name I forget. With the director of Chernobyl though, I’m certainly intrigued; if anything I hope it has similar quality.
