Wow, Jeff Bridges and Meryl Streep. What an odd couple. This looks interesting.August 6, 2013 at 4:22 pm #108179
A movie in which Streep will be the second best actor at best (Bridges for me is second only to Gene Hackman among American film actors of the last 40 years),
Noyce is a decent director, better than most she has worked with in a long time.August 6, 2013 at 4:37 pm #108180
They’re making a movie about Grindr?
Oooh I’m getting a “The Social Network” type vibe hereAugust 6, 2013 at 4:39 pm #108181
at the title. It really be like a horny “The Social Network”.
Meryl Streep: “If your clients invented Grindr, they would’ve invented Grindr!”August 6, 2013 at 5:34 pm #108182
I’ve read the book, and it could certainly make a good film adaptation. Streep’s character is not really given much plot in the book, so I assume they’ll be expanding that part. I’m cautiously optimistic.August 6, 2013 at 5:39 pm #108183
Loved the book as a kid, so I’m intrigued by this annoucement. The Streep role is kind of confusing to me though, as I don’t recall the Head Elder really being a character in the book. The main character’s mother is the only important adult female character that I can recall. I worry that this might be an attempt to give the movie a conventional “villain.”
Way too early to speculate on awards obiously, but I’d be interested to see how this film fares in regards to its Cinematography. Without giving too much away, there’s elements in the book that could lead to (possibly gimmicky) cinematography choices that the Academy and others will eat up.August 6, 2013 at 6:47 pm #108184
“The Giver” is a great novel. I hope this adaptation works out. It’ll be a tricky one. Streep and Bridges? Wow.August 6, 2013 at 7:05 pm #108185
I’ve read the book multiple times and considering I don’t even remember Streep’s character at all, I’m surprised she’s taking this role.August 6, 2013 at 7:07 pm #108186
I do not remember that character at all. She does not even have a name.
Who else has been waiting for this movie for years?
By the way, should this even be a movie? Some of it is unfilmable.

Wait who is Streep playing? There is no major female character in the novel or even a minor one.August 6, 2013 at 7:23 pm #108188

Her sole purpose for signing on is to work with Jeff Bridges.August 6, 2013 at 7:25 pm #108189
Can’t say I blame her – I’d take a miniscule role just to be in a movie with the Dude too.August 6, 2013 at 8:21 pm #108190
I remember a couple of “scenes” in the book with a council of authority figures…I assume she’ll be the chief of those people. That council might have even been in the background, but I think it wa there. Like I said before, the role of the authority figures have to be expanded. It’s Meryl f’ing Streep. No way is she not going to be a major part of this movie.
