Brett Haley is set to direct a Grease movie prequel titled Summer Lovin’ at Paramount Pictures. Leah McKendrick has penned the screenplay with Temple Hill and Picturestart producing.
One of the classic songs from the musical, ‘Summer Nights,’ details the summer fling that started the relationship between Danny Zuko & Sandy Olsson. This movie will detail that fateful meeting and what followed.

The fact that Danny begins the original story as an emotionally abusive douchebag means that any development this prequel gives him will be completely undercut.
Also, the only reason Grease has any popularity left is because of the catchy music, not the characters. Doing a story with these characters but without the original music is just dumb.
Honestly, I’d rather see a remake of Grease before a prequel. Maybe that way someone could change all of its horrible characterization and plot issues so that there’s a reason to watch outside of the music. I recall hearing the recent live event did something along the lines of that.

Anyway, I fully expect them to cast someone like KJ Apa to play Danny Zuko. That way they’ll have all the Riverdale fans in the theater opening weekend.

Grease isn’t particular popular anymore though. Much like Cats I think the studio is banking too much on its popularity when it first came out. I’m a theatre fan and I’m hard pressed to find anyone who really likes this show. Which is particularly noticeable given I was involved in a production at school one year.

Though Fox’s live television production from 2016 was quite a hit in the ratings.

Alright fair point, but TV and movies are different fields and I don’t think it would’ve been as successful if it was in theaters.

She swam by me she got a cramp
He ran by me got my suit damp
I saved her life she nearly drowned
He showed off splashing around
Took her bowling in the arcade
We went strolling drank lemonade
We made out under the dock
He got friendly holding my hand
Well, she got friendly down in the sand
He was sweet, just turned eighteen
Well, she was good, you know what I mean
It turned colder; that’s where it ends
So I told her we’d still be friends
Then we made our true love vow
Wonder what she’s doin’ now

Exactly. Everybody already knows what happens, it occurs right before the main plot begins and they tell us all about it. There’s nothing left to show.

I love Grease so this is going to sound weird but I really think this prequel is a horrible idea. Now if they were talking a sequel with all the original cast going to save reidel high from closing or something that I’d be down for.
