Minari is truly underperforming though. Unlike Judas, it has no excuse for missing all of these early nominations: it’s been out for over a year. I think CC will embrace it, but it absolutely needs to do well at the guilds to have any chance at Oscar recognition.

Also, I love how there’s only 6 films on their Animated Feature longlist. 2020 was truly an abominable year for animated films.

With 6 nominees, I can actually see Bo Burnham nominated for supporting actor.

I watched Saint Maud yesterday. The hype is real. Morfydd Clark was brilliant! Not sure if BAFTA has a bias against edgy films, but I hope she gets nominated

Darlings, Religious Clark deserves a nomination for Saint Maud… hopefully she gets it. She’s amazing.

    We can predict BAFTA now!

(I think Olivia Colman is missing)

My predictions centre predictions are a mess and not anything like my actual predictions because in actress, actor and supporting actress there are so many viable Jessie Buckleys that can happen this year (including Buckley herself!)

One thing people should keep an eye out for is coattails to lead performances (especially female lead) in supporting actor. Kenneth Branagh, Jim Broadbent, Alfred Molina, Michael Sheen are examples of this happening in the past under the jury system. At the moment I’d bet on Bo Burnham making the cut. Promising Young Woman is a film we definitely know BAFTA is going crazy for and Mulligan is probably winning actress here. However it could easily be David Strathairn who coattails to McDormand or one of Rylance or Redmayne who coattail to Baron Cohen. Cumberbatch Coattails don’t necessarily only have to happen in supporting actor so watch out for Ellen Burstyn, Dominique Fishback

In Actress there is definitely going to be a surprise BAFTA pick in there who goes nowhere else during this awards season and if you aren’t predicting that to happen you’re absolutely deluding yourselves. People on here underestimate the willingness of BAFTA members to deviate and award British performers and/or performers from British films in normal years when there isn’t a pandemic going on. Jessie Buckley, Viola Davis, Annette Bening and Maggie Smith to list a few. I think in this particular year where there is a bigger emphasis on racial diversity within BAFTA and a bigger divide between the films AMPAS members get to see and those BAFTA members get to see to expect two random British picks in the Actress category and don’t be surprised to see two in each acting category. Bukky Bakray and Morfydd Clark have gotten the most attention, their films have performed best on the long-list so they probably got in due to the plurality vote rather than due to being jury picks and both of their films will be top 4 in British Film so I have them in at the moment but do not underestimate BAFTA winner Wunmi Mosaku or last year’s nominee Jessie Buckley either. I can see a world where they chose these two ladies and award Clark and Bakray with rising star nominations instead. Don’t be surprised if Alfre Woodard or one of Winslet or Loren’s names are called either and we see a big snub in the Actress category from one of the top 4 (although not Kirby or Mulligan because I feel like they’re the safest in this category). The only two I feel confident in ruling out are Adams and Zendaya. Would love to see one of Garner or Blank happen but I won’t hold my breath.

Each category will have at least one person of colour nominated so there is no reason for why Yuh-jung Youn would miss when her film has been performing so well. Supporting Actress is a weird one though.

Actor seems to have four locks in the form of Ahmed, Boseman, Hopkins and Rahim (I anticipate both him and Foster get in here considering the strong British pedigree of their film and how well it’s done here on the long-list in random tech categories too). Oldman is probably safe too. I would love for Lindo to happen here but I think the last slot is between him, Gourav (whose film has done quite well here), Mikkelsen (whose film also has done well here) and Fiennes (whose film is being seen at the right time and has also done well here).

I did overlook Olivia Colman but she is now added. It takes about an hour or two for it to clear through the cache system and show up in the event.
