On The French Dispatch’s acting chances, of course the Academy sees Anderson as a primarily comedy director, and as we all know, historically it’s super hard for actors to be nominated for comedy films (even if you don’t think Anderson makes comedies). However, they also might be affected by the backlash for Ralph Fiennes not being nominated for The Grand Budapest Hotel, and nominate someone here as a way to make amends. Looking at the trailer, I’d say Benicio Del Toro and Bill Murray are the most likely nominees, as the plot seems to revolve around them, though the latter might push On the Rocks instead and use The French Dispatch as leverage.

    https://variety.com/2020/film/news/maggie-gyllenhaal-lost-daughter-cast-jessie-buckley-olivia-colman-dakota-johnson-1203451085/

Olivia Colman Leads All-Star Cast for Maggie Gyllenhaal’s directorial debut, Maggie Gyllenhaal has tapped Oscar-winner Olivia Colman, Dakota Johnson, Jessie Buckley and Peter Sarsgaard to star in the feature adaptation of “The Lost Daughter.”

this is probably for next year.

Interesting that post-Oscar win, Colman has no qualms / uses that clout to work with first time directors. First Zeller for The Father and now Gyllenhaal for this project, although notably both directors are also the writers/adapting the material. The material for this looks very juicy for all 3 female roles.

Brandi Carlile has recorded and co-written a theme song for Pixar’s Onward. This could be a contender in Original Song

I’d be surprised if at least one Pixar song doesn’t get in this year, especially after Toy Story 4’s surprise nomination. But will it be Onward or Soul? That’s the question.

    Academy-Award winners:

Parasite: Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Original Screenplay

Joker: Best Actor - Joaquin Phoenix

    Jojo Rabbit: Best Adapted Screenplay

Bill Murray is going to have a great season with On The Rocks for Lead and French Dispatch for Supporting.

Really hope Sofia Coppola can be the first woman with two Best Director noms, followed by Jane Campion (Power Of The Dog) in 2022. I pray Marielle Heller’s next film, whatever she chooses, gets acclaim. She’s a very special talent and it’s a shame her work was overlooked for Can You Ever Forgive Me.

Just spotted that Amazon picked up Sylvie’s Love out of Sundance.

Possible that Tessa Thompson could have a good year if Rebecca Hall’s Passing is finished in time for TIFF or Tribeca. Probably Indie Spirit rather than Oscars though, same for Phyllida Lloyd’s Herself.

Tessa Thompson feels like the kind of actress that will break through eventually. But not yet.

The production design [of The French Dispatch] will definitely be a contender, based alone from the trailer.

Some real pedigree in the art department. Production designer Adam Stockhausen (Oscar-winner for The Grand Budapest Hotel, nominee for 12 Years a Slave and Bridge of Spies) and set decorators Rena DeAngelo (nominee for Bridge of Spies) and Hélène Dubreuil (nominee for Midnight in Paris).

My big prediction is that we’re getting another foreign language picture nominated for Best Picture, and it will come from Cannes. After Parasite’s proximity to Best Picture (whether or not that dream happens, it’s top 3), I think awards strategies will take international films way more seriously in priority.

After Parasite won, I think this is an idea seriously worth considering. Cannes is going to be as important to keep an eye on as Sundance this year. In all likelihood, there is a Best Picture nominee for 2021 that we aren’t even talking about.

    For Your Consideration:

    Best Picture: Parasite

If Hillbilly Elegy is at least on The Two Popes level of success, Close is sweeping. Adams is getting Melissa Leo’d yet again.

No chance they both get put in supporting.
