I think Passing could potentially perform well with the membership. I know there’s little expectation that films centred around race at the BAFTAs but considering Passing is a British co-production that’s the directorial debut of a British actress, I think it could overcome the hurdles put ahead of it.

    FYC:
Picture: Passing, The Power of the Dog, Shiva Baby, Spencer
Director: Jane Campion, Rebecca Hall, Pablo Larrain
Actor: Benedict Cumberbatch, Andrew Garfield, Winston Duke/James McAvoy
Actress: Olivia Colman, Kristen Stewart, Tessa Thompson
    S. Actor: Richard E. Grant, Troy Kotsur, Kodi Smit-McPhee
    S. Actress : Kirsten Dunst/Martha Plimpton/Ruth Negga/Diana Rigg/Anya Taylor-Joy
    O. Screenplay: Bergman Island/Mass/Nine Days
    A. Screenplay: The Lost Daughter/Passing/The Power of the Dog/Shiva Baby

She is but I think there’s a few changes still to be made on the centre.

    Blonde is still in there.

Dornan and Balfe aren’t in Supporting yet.

PTA film yet to have its title listed (still as Untitled PTA Film).

I mean, we don’t really know if they’re actually going supporting. It’s a very likely move, but they could very well stay in lead.

It feels like they and Comer are more likely to go Supporting and there’s no confirmation of them going lead so unsure why they’re still not in supporting in the centre.

Also why is Blonde still there? That was moved months ago…?

The mainroblem in placing Balfe in supporting is 7 time Oscar Nominee Dame Judi Dench.

Balfe has got the notices as best of the ensemble in multiple reviews.

I haven’t really heard any buzz around Dench.

Judi Dench is not getting a BAFTA nomination if Catriona Balfe goes supporting.

Last year BAFTA turned out to be the awards pre-Oscars that let us know who would win Best Actor and Best Actress – will it be the same this year?

I almost always prefer BAFTA’s choices than Oscars choices, but their new system of nominations is confusing and leads to huge glaring omissions and films that we are never ever going to get to see nominated (for those of us who do not like in the UK).

Embargo for No Time to Die will be lifted tomorrow. The BAFTA membership has gravitated towards Bond when its been acclaimed (Daniel Craig’s nom for Casino Royale, Skyfall) so it will be interesting to see what happens here.

I think The Souvenir Part II stands a strong chance of being something the jury goes all out for. There seems to be a lot of passion for it (and a lot more than for the first film) and its auteur driven. Joanna Hogg is arguably overdue, has a very distinct independent style of filmmaking (one that very much appeals to a jury like this one) and she fits the juries’ quota.

Likewise the first one would probably have been nominated under this current voting system.
