On June 1, an unofficial “director’s cut” of one of the most infamous cinematic disasters in history, the 1993 live-action Super Mario Bros. movie, was posted on The Internet Archive.

This follows nearly two years of restorative work done by a team of super-fans on an extremely rare VHS which was once owned by Academy Award-nominated director Roland Joffe, who was a producer of this movie. The VHS was discovered in May 2019, and contains over 20 minutes of extra footage cut from the theatrical release.

Many of these new scenes provide much-needed context to other scenes that were deemed either poorly written or poorly edited by the critics back in 1993, and result in a cut that is superior to its theatrical counterpart. While this new cut is far from perfect, the restorative team plans to “”update” it over time, much like “The Recobbled Cut” of The Thief and the Cobbler.

Twenty-eight years after its initial release, which is cited by many as the beginning of the “curse” which afflicted Hollywood’s numerous attempts to get video game adaptations right prior to the release of Sonic the Hedgehog in 2020, Super Mario Bros. is being given another chance. This is especially timely, as it comes just over a year before the scheduled release of Hollywood’s second attempt at making a Super Mario movie, an animated film which is being produced by Illumination and (presumably) distributed by Universal.

The “directors cut” can be viewed here:
