I had to go with Kate Hudson here. Almost Famous is a personal favorite of mine and I love that performance. I’m not a fan of Jennifer Hudson’s win, but I also don’t have particularly strong feelings about any of the other performances that year so it doesn’t bother me too much.

I’ll throw in my picks in this category for each year (not neccesarily amongst the nominees) since others are:

    2000: Kate Hudson, Almost Famous
2001: Gwyneth Paltrow, The Royal Tenenbaums
    2002: Meryl Streep, Adaptation
2003: Shohreh Aghdashloo, House of Sand and Fog
2004: Daryl Hannah, Kill Bill Vol. 2
    2005: Amy Adams, Junebug
    2006: Rinko Kikuchi, Babel
2007: Amy Ryan, Gone Baby Gone
    2008: Marisa Tomei, The Wrestler
    2009: Melanie Laurent, Inglorious Basterds
    2010: Mila Kunis, Black Swan
2011: Jessica Chastain, Take Shelter (might be category fraud, but Shannon is so far and away the lead in this that I think it’s reasonable)
    2012: Anne Hathaway, Les Miserables
    2013: Lupita Nyong’o, 12 Years a Slave
2014: Carrie Coon, Gone Girl (just barely edging out Arquette)

The biggest for me is probably Shohreh losing, though there are a few I’d change

    2002-Moore over Zeta-Jones

    2003-Shohreh over Renee

2005-Williams over Weisz but Adams is 2nd

    2007-Ronan over Swinton

    2008-Davis over Cruz 100%

    2010-Adams over Leo

    2011-Chastain over Spencer

The last three years are hard cause I love each winning performance and wouldn’t want to take them away. However, each year had another perf I wish could be recognized namely Adams for the master, laura dern who was the best part of her movie and Jennifer Lawrence whose work in Hustle is without a doubt the best she’s done in my eyes.

The best supporting actress winner is Mo’Nique. I still haven’t seen a better performance yet. It is one of the few times the Academy has gotten it right.

I wish this year offered someone that inspired the righteous passion I feel over the outcome like 2003 or 2008 but when the best non-fraudulent nominee is a very good Kate Winslet who is deserving of at least once winning for the right role…its hard to care

    Ok, here I go. Again.

Rachel Weisz, gave one of my favorite perfs of all time.

Kikuchi is terrific, but I preferred the work of Adriana Barraza.

Dench is memorable in her uglified way. She’s always terrific; but I was for Helen Mirren. She nails LizR.

    Octavia Spencer, deserved her Oscar.

Tilda Swinton deserved her Oscar. And, it was a long time coming.

There’s inevitably a lot of discussion over Mo’Nique and her fabulous win. For me, it is still one of the phoniest perfs around. I preferred Lenny Kravitz’es cameo, and all the girls in that classroom over everyone else in that cast.

    gach.

Octavia Spencer and Jennifer Hudson are one of the few female Oscar Winner with the distinction of “GRAND SLAM QUEENS” for they have won all the Major Acting Award Giving bodies in their respective years. Oscars, BAFTA, SAG, Globes, Critics Choice.

    Others are:

    >Julia Roberts (Best Actress 2000)
    >Renee Zellweger (Supporting Actress 2003)
    >Reese Witherspoon (Best Actress 2005)
    >Helen Mirren (Best Actress 2006)
    >Jennifer Hudson (Supporting Actress 2006)
    >Mo’Nique (Supporting Actress 2009)
    >Natalie Portman (Best Actress 2010)
    >Octavia Spencer (Supporting Actress 2011)
    >Anne Hathaway (Supporting Actress 2012)
    >Cate Blanchett (Best Actress 2013)
    >Julianne Moore (Best Actress 2014)
    >Patricia Arquette (Supporting Actress 2014)

This is such a rare ocassion that all Critics collides in one choice, who knows when it can happen again.

I thought Monique was outstanding. I do think she over did it in some scenes but I thought she nailed it. It would have been nice to see her and Marion Cotillard (Nine) go at it.

Are people serious? So far, MoNique has been the most deserving I’ve seen or one of the most. She captured the essence of an abusive, mentally ill monster. Phony and overdone? Lmfao, if Daniel Day Lewis can win Oscars for hamfisted performances then MoNique can have hers. I have seen and heard of people who are either exactly like her or even worse. Not all abusers are these silent, manipulative, looking-outside-the-window Barbara Hershey in Black Swan type of motherfuckers. Some are loud, violent, brash and that’s how Mary was in Precious.

    Your opinion is consensus Nick.

For me it’s about perspective. I didnt say she was ham-fisted.  But if they had added any more cliches to that screenplay, they’d have to throw in the kitchen sink. An environment she fits into nicely here. Mariah Carey, is more believable as a social worker; although, none of my colleagues would have ever ‘dressed’ like her.

Personally, Mo’Nique looks sane compared to what some of us have seen.

Besides, I’m the only one around here who has never admired her performance.
