I’ll start with Macaulay Culkin in My Girl
It’s a family romantic movie in which we know death is remotely the last thing you could ever imaging would happen to someone but we can expect from a character who is ill or advanced in age but this kid’s death was so devastating after seeing for about an hour the romance blosoming between the two… that was a big shockMay 13, 2020 at 2:25 pm #1203480048The most surprising death for me in a movie is in the French film Le Petit Lieutenant (The Young Lieutenant) – I was shocked the first time I saw the movie! The death occurs around the half way point. Nathalie Baye won a Cesar for Best Actress as the chief inspector, a role very similar to Helen Mirren’s in Prime Suspect series. I won’t spoil it in case any of you ever see the movie but it was a total shocker!

Vincent Vega’s death is a great twist. Up till that point, he’s the film’s most prominent character (he still ends the film being the largest part, but it’s clear by the end he’s not the main character), so killing him off halfway through is a real shock. And then, there’s the additional twist of seeing him appear later on and realizing that the third story takes place in between the first and the second.

Any elder here see Psycho at the theater? That must have been the ultimate shocker especially since Janet Leigh was the biggest star in the film and she dies an hour into it. (or did word leak out?)

Psycho is more intricate though. When it starts you clearly think you are watching a movie that will be about Janet Leigh stealing money. Then suddenly she and the money are just gone. It must have been incredible to see the film without knowing anything.
Another shocker would be Tom Skeritt in Alien. He also was the biggest star in the film and was playing the captain of the ship. It seemed like he would be there for the final battle. That was such smart casting putting Sigourney in there. Initially in the script the crew was all men. It made it even more shocking (especially in 1979) that a woman would be the last one standing and that she saved herself and wasn’t saved by a man. (as was the norm in films then.)

May 14, 2020 at 8:44 pm #1203482084Godfather One – You know who. I was a little shocked, but I did not expect it to be in this manner. I thought that it would be due to getting shot.

Even when I watched Psycho the first time and knowing beforehand Janet Leigh was going to be killed (they spoil the shower scene for you everywhere) I was very distracted by the story she stealing the money thinking what her next move will be trying getting away with it that I forgot what I was watching….till she shows up to Norman’s motel 🙁
