TÁR apparently is actually accessible going by some of the early reactions on twitter.
It has, however, been described as “harsh” and “ice cold”, which will obviously make it DOA for the “why can’t movies just be niiiiiiiiiice” people.

The director’s branch is going to eat TÁR right up.

Sure, it didn’t win, but I think the days of films being deemed too “divisive, cold, harsh, weird” doesn’t automatically translate to being shut out with the Oscars. Judging by last years race, we are seeing Academy members embrace more of the divisive films than ever before.
I know, it’s just frustrating – TPOTD wasn’t even particularly cold, it was a deeply sensual movie, and it was still treated as this frigid, incomprehensible art film. And Spencer got shut out except for Stewart, even though it should have been incredibly competitive in the tech categories, just because some people got pissy that it wasn’t Darkest Hour. It’s better than it used to be, but there’s still a long way to go.

How frickin' exceptional is Todd Field's Tár? Let me put it this way – think The Red Shoes via Uncut Gems, with a slay-all-day performance from Cate Blanchett that's up there with her work in Carol. REVIEW: https://t.co/pcEdn7bmFq #Venezia79

TÁR is incredible and kept reminding me of Kenneth Lonergan’s masterpiece MARGARET, with its focus on a flawed, frustrating, often hilariously self-involved protagonist and the people she leaves in her wake. Blanchett slays hard. It’s her career-achievement reel all in one movie!

TÁR is one of the boldest and most exciting new American movies I’ve seen in years. I can’t stop thinking about it.
Todd Field! Cate Blanchett!! Lydia Tár!!!

#TAR, the first film in 16 years by Todd Field, is deliberately cold, shot in palettes of blue and grey, plus a heroine to whom audiences may not easily warm. But no matter, because she’s played by Cate Blanchett, who conquers this monster of a role. She is triumphant. #Venezia79 pic.twitter.com/MiC9Cz1mbH

September 2, 2022 at 5:46 am #1205062997Safe to say Cate Blanchett is winning the Volpi Cup?

Either that or the movie will win a bigger award, that will make her ineligible for the Volpi Cup. Altho, she can still win even if the movie wins Screenplay or Grand Jury Prize.

Unlike Oscars, these film festivals don’t easily give actresses their second win. Hard to say about Volpi Cup, but I think the film can win in one of film/director/screenplay categories.

I’m given to understand that it’s more nuanced than that.

But tbf, people who talk about (anti-)wokeness seldom have the capacity to catch up on nuances.

September 2, 2022 at 7:25 am #1205063104Why do I still keep hearing these lazy comparisons to Spencer? Lol.
If anything Blonde is the closest parallel to Spencer, just a bit more X-rated lol.
ReplyCopy URLSeptember 2, 2022 at 7:38 am #1205063116Yeah the Spencer comparisons make no sense. This isn’t based on any real person so people don’t have reservations that they’d have with icons like Diana or Marilyn being portrayed in very uncharacteristic or unexpected ways.
I’m given to understand that it’s more nuanced than that.
I feel if it wasn’t the critics who already rated it and all the social media reactions wouldn’t be as positive as they are.

With this reception, a second win could be on the table. But if the film picks up any of the other prizes instead, it would still pretty helpful for its chances at Picture by proving it’s not just an acting showcase.
