With this reception, a second win could be on the table. But if the film picks up any of the other prizes instead, it would still pretty helpful for its chances at Picture by proving it’s not just an acting showcase.
Director or Golden Lion would arguably be better for, or more indicative of, Blanchett’s Oscar winning chances than if she won the Volpi. Sounds a bit contrived, but it would prove the film could hit noms across the board, making her a much stronger candidate were she to be nommed. It’ll be harder to win if she isn’t Picture nommed up against Robbie, Colman and Yeoh, all of whom you’d think will be Picture nommed. Evidence tends to suggest a Picture nom elevates you in Acting races when those around you aren’t Picture nommed. Sure, she’s Blanchett, so she could win on a lone nom with raves this strong, but you’d fancy her more if the film was more widely beloved beyond her.

September 3, 2022 at 10:03 pm #1205065660The cast of Women Talking attended the premiere of Empire of Light-I posted a tweet on that film’s main thread-and now they’re at the TÁR premiere:
CAROL reunion in Telluride: Rooney Mara (along with the rest of the cast of WOMEN TALKING) is here for the North American premiere of TÁR, which stars, and will be preceded by a tribute to, Cate Blanchett.

September 3, 2022 at 10:55 pm #1205065671While some are worrying whether it will appeal to general audience, a close example, The Favourite, comes up to my mind, which is also artistic but still did well with industry voters and eventually took home Best Actress. They even both premiered in Venice! TAR might follow a similar path to it and has even bigger chances in Best Director.

Not to mention both made it to NYFF and Telluride as well, skipping TIFF

The Favorite was a comedy about royal politicking. TAR is not going to be as crowd pleasing and it doesn’t need to. The comparison doesn’t make sense to me.
ReplyCopy URLSeptember 4, 2022 at 4:54 pm #1205066653The way I see it is simple – people will want to go and watch Cate Blanchett in this. Because no other actor can bring the audience to some arthouse movie, like Blanchett can. She did it with “Carol”, movie grossing over $40M on a modest budget of $10M. And that movie gained a lot of attention even after the Oscar season that year. Blanchett said that people constantly approach her and speak they saw her in “Carol”.
So, bringing audience to see this will not be such an insurmountable task as we have believed. Of course, it won’t earn hundreds of millions of dollars, but Blanchett may draw some audience. And if the movie gets push from Venice in form of Volpi Cup/Golden Lion, and other festivals, I suppose we can expect it to make some noise.
I am now waiting to see how Venice will end, especially in terms of awards and I honestly can see a big push for “TAR” by the end of next week.

The Favourite is not crowdpleasing either lol. And why does this have to do with its genre? They’re both more artistic films and still seem very promising on their award paths, let alone being a top contender for Best Actress. That’s the point.
ReplyCopy URLSeptember 5, 2022 at 12:29 am #1205068465The same happened with Blue Jasmine, performing as well at the box office. You can say that Blanchett is an arthouse box office Queen.
TAR is going to be «need to watch» and feel like an event, just like Blue Jasmine and Carol,
How many other actors and actresses can do the same?
