So come Oscar nigh, several moviestars can be awarded:

    Best Actress: Scarlett Johansson
    Best Supporting Actor: Brad Pitt
    Best Supporting Actress: Jennifer Lopez

When was the last time the Academy awarded several moviestars at the same time? With moviestars I mean actors who have become celebrities, lots of paparazzi, tons of cash, globally famous etc

Even though I’m predicting Scar Jo to take best actress and Pitt to take best supporting actor, I doubt two, let alone three of them will be awarded next Oscar night.

It’s rare. The last time I can imagine almost everybody being a real star is possibly 2003 when Penn, Theron and Zellweger won. They were all big “celebrities” back then. Even Penn and Theron became more of a paparazzi thing later since they dated for a while a few years ago. And it’s not like Tim Robbins was a nobody or that once upon a time he didn’t get coverage thanks to his relationship with Sarandon, plus their political views. And to top it off a huge blockbuster film, Return of the King, swept. Original screenplay went to “hollywood royalty”, song went to Annie Lennox.

You could also say that runner ups included Murray, Depp, Baldwin, Keaton, more big stars.

What is the definition of a movie star here? One needs to know that before one can evaluate this.

Few would disgree that Brad Pitt is a movie star, but what about Joaquin Phoenix, Saoirse Ronan or Laura Dern? Depends entirely on how we define a movie star.

Side note: J-Lo is without question a megawatt superstar but not predominantly a movie star.

I’m bored so I’ll just keep commenting here.

Maybe “movie” star is not the first thing that comes to mind, but she makes more than enough films. Whenever she’s in a film she’s everywhere, talk show hosts and the press once again fall hard for her because she’s “Jennifer motherfucking Lopez” and I get to interview her or cover her on the press tour. She’s in 100 magazine covers at the same time. That the film ends up being a shitty film (except Hustlers, apparently) that didn’t gross much is another story. Also, I don’t think the thread should refer to “movie” stars anyway. We just finished a Lady Gaga year at the Oscars and had she won BA, she would’ve counted for this even though she’s not a “movie” star.

At the end of the day a HUGE person will be seen going up those stairs to collect an Oscar and the general public will react VERY differently than when Olivia Colman won, for example. Which is what the thread is about.

The real comment should be: J.Lo is not winning an Oscar anyway.

Ok, going by the definition suggested above, my guess is we’re likely to see more movie stars (or perhaps superstar is a better word) win this year than some of the previous years which have been dominated by respected thespians rather than A-list superstars.

Actress: Johansson, Zellweger and Theron are all within reach; indeed right now it looks like the winner is one of them.

Actor: DiCaprio or De Niro aren’t winning and the rest aren’t movie stars as per above definition. But Phoenix or even Driver winning would still be more of a movie star win than, say, Malek or Affleck.

Supporting Actress: The most obvious mega stars – Lopez, Kidman and Streep – aren’t winning. The rest of the field is murkier to define. One could make a pretty strong case that Bening and Robbie are movie stars, but I feel like this one is going to Dern who is a formidable thespian but not necessarily a megastar.

Supporting Actor: Pitt and Hanks are the possible superstar nominees and Pitt is probably winning.

P.S. This is the first time I’ve ever heard someone claim Cate Blanchett isn’t an A-list movie star lol.

I would argue the last time was 2008 with Sean Penn, Kate Winslet, Heath Ledger and Penelope Cruz all winning.

Well, Sean Penn and Kate Winslet, cannot be categorized as movie stars. They are more actors

Cate Blanchett’s films have grossed over 13 billion dollars and counting.
This could be a far easier question to answer if tabloids are in your frame of reference.

Cate Blanchett and now Kate Winslet aren’t movie stars?

This is a surreally bizarre thread.

Is Sean Penn a movie star? My sister doesn’t know who he was during the El Chapo journalist stunt from few years ago.

This is true. Don’t know why I overlooked this year. The four of them were big stars in 2008.
