There’s a rumour that the Academy is making some changes to the Oscars broadcast, to increase ratings.

No, no, no!! No presenting of ANY categories during commercial breaks. This isn’t the Tony Awards, where they relegate category presentations to commercial breaks in order to have as many musical performances as possible. Have the short film categories be presented back-to-back, so that they’re not scattered. Those winners deserve time in the spotlight just like everyone else, and sometimes they’ve actually given the best speeches of the night because those categories can be quite unpredictable. The first step to driving up the ratings is getting an actual host this time. Get someone who’s popular, and not controversial.

    The Rock as the host

When will they realize that they need to stream the awards in order to bring up their viewership. I know so many people who can’t watch because they don’t have cable (me included). God, when is their contract with ABC up?

What they NEED is to, i dunno, be entertaining. Have a good host like Chris Rock. Cut out the unneccesary “oh here’s how the Oscars work” “oh look at our Museum” and the boring coy remarks. At the Nominees Luncheon, say to everyone “You get no more than two minutes for your speech and then the mic will literally cut off, so have your speeches prepared.” Do some big performances like Hugh Jackman’s “The Musical Is Back.” Especially this last one. They should be doing things showing the greatness of movies. EVERY oscar ceremony should be a brilliant homage to film. So, if we have two minute speeches for 23 categories, that’s 46 minutes. Now add in acting clips (which they should bring back), let’s put ourselves at 58 minutes. Now, 1 minute clips for all the other categories, now we’re at 77 minutes. A one-minute tribute for all the best picture nominees like they do, we’re at 87 minutes. The host’s opening, we’re at 97 minutes. the performances for all the songs, we’re at 117 minutes. That leaves 63 MINUTES (including commercials though) to do those special things I was talking about. And wanna know how they could get around the commercial thing? Do what the Olympics do, put them side by side, so that we can still see the screen but we also see the commercial. That would be good for speeches. It’s not taking away the spotlight. Sure we have to hear the commercial, but we can still have subtitles or something. I dunno this is a lot, but this would be better than the last dozen years

I think it would be more spectacular if they were held outdoors in a large venue with a big stage and large spotlights illuminating the night, with access to diverse audiences and great musical events.

At the Hollywood Bowl for example. And that they advance the time of the ceremony to be at sunset:

These days, everyone in Hollywood is controversial.

They are so out of touch and stupid, I can’t even. How can someone think that cutting categories from the live cast will be the solution?

    • Instead of playing commercials, have studios pay to debut trailers.
    • Start the show an hour or two earlier on a  Saturday Night.
    • Switch the short films categories with Stunts and Voiceover/Motion-Capture.
    • Add a surprise Achievement Award that goes to something in that year that was worthwhile (In 2019, Kevin Feige for having the highest grossing film of all time).
    • Scatter the awards (aka, dont leave all the big ones to the end except Picture)
    • Don’t have a host, invest in major star presenters.
    • Have fun with it (pass around alcohol, have the nominees “fued”) but keep it about the nominees (dont spend 15 minutes surprising a cinema nearby).
    • Keep the performances but make it a medley.

Have a great day if you see this!

I don’t really think it matters what they do anymore a lot of people have gotten sick of award shows in the last couple years and the mess earlier this year didn’t help.

Agree. A malaise towards the Oscars exists. I used to attend an Academy Awards dinner party (it was an EVENT!), the local newspaper ran a pool, & the art house theater televised the ceremony. All have faded the past 20 years….

I’m not American and I’m apolitical so I don’t have interest or knowledge about Democrats and Republicans. It seems too muck attacks to the Trump voters killed some of the Oscars ratings. These days, it seems Oscars are 100% Democrats. That’s what the Republicans think. It’s all really weird because these days 51% or more than 51% of All the Hollywood Casts and Crews are NOT American like me. These days the Oscars are Worldwide

I actually love lots of these ideas

Just when we thought the Academy was interested in supporting diversity. These are the awards that go to emerging filmmakers..and the Academy wants to sideline them? Insane.
