– The Hurt Locker (By A Wide Margin, As Well – 2009 is one of the weaker years in cinema, in general, I’d say)

– 127 Hours (Severely underrated, Boyle’s direction is perfectly suited to a story, which in anyone else’s hands, could be extremely boring, and James Franco deserved an Oscar for his greatest performance yet – Social Network is probably next up, then True Grit, both great auteurs at the height of their powers, w/great ensembles. Not seen Black Swan or Winter’s Bone – but I’d imagine I’d enjoy them, given who’s involved. Inception and The Fighter are, also, quality nominees.)

– Midnight In Paris (Coming from someone who has never been an enormous fan of W. Allen (although I think Match Point is a masterpiece), this was quite a surprise. Owen Wilson has never been better, either, and deserved to get a nomination. Moneyball is a very close second – a very different screenplay from Sorkin and it is probably Bennett Miller’s and Brad Pitt’s best work. The rest are fiiiine.)

– Silver Linings Playbook (I know it’s become cool to hate O. Russell’s films with Cooper & Lawrence, but this is great. Genuinely a masterpiece. It hits well on all bases. Argo was a strong winner – I didn’t have a problem with it winning, I like it quite a bit. Zero Dark Thirty was, also, a very strong movie – but doesn’t come as close to the quality of The Hurt Locker as one would hope. Django Unchained, at this point, would have been Tarantino’s best since Jackie Brown and might have been a masterpiece, if the ending rang more true to the horrors of the period. Instead, Tarantino decided to make it unrealistic. He should have ended it with the gunfight after Waltz kills Candie… hence dispelling the idea that the story was a white saviour narrative and giving the film more staying power by displaying the inherent and continuing effects of slavery upon America. God, that’s pretentious.)

– The Wolf Of Wall Street (Although American Hustle and 12 Years A Slave, also, rank amongst the best films of all time for me. Dallas Buyers Club is, also, great. So’s Philomena, Her, Nebraska and pretty much every film nominated this year. If any of them won, I wouldn’t complain)

– The Grand Budapest Hotel (Wes Anderson’s magnum opus. Fiennes should not only have been nominated, but, also, won an Oscar. All the same, Birdman is an incredible film and I can completely understand its win. The same goes for Whiplash. Additionally, both American Sniper and The Imitation Game err on the preferable side of Oscar-bait biopics, with their great direction, acting (particularly, the leads) and screenplays). I haven’t seem Selma or Boyhood yet :()

– The Big Short (Such an incredible screenplay. Spotlight is a decent best picture winner, but I probably love it less than any of the winner’s this decade, outside of the King’s Speech. Bridge Of Spies and Brooklyn are great – if they won, I’d have been happy. Mad Max was vastly overrated. The Martian was mediocore. And The Revenant, whilst incredibly well-shot, was lacking, in my opinion, a certain depth or excitement that movies like this should have… at least, in my opinion. And Room… yeah, Room was pretty good.)

– La La Land (I love it – but Moonlight is my third favourite of this lineup, so I struggle to find it to be to much of an  issue. All the same, La La Land is pretty much the definition of great cinema to me. Manchester By The Sea is, also, incredible – with it , perhaps, being the greatest display of grief I have ever seen put to film. Also, Casey Affleck might give one of the greatest performances of all-time. Hell Or High Water and Fences were, also, great. Don’t mind the rest, apart from Arrival – which I couldn’t get into :()

– Phantom Thread (Let’s be honest any film directed by Paul Thomas Anderson is going to be one of the best films of a given year, if not the best. And this is no exception. I think Lady Bird, Three Billboards and Get Out are probably much more harrowing and emotional experiences than Phantom Thread – but, as an example of cinema as an art form, Phantom Thread wins. Dunkirk’s pretty good. On the other hand, Darkest Hour and The Post are probably amongst the dullest cinematic endeavours I’ve seen in recent years.)

– A Star Is Born (Bradley Cooper is great and underrated. BlacKKKlansman, whilst not quite as good, was an incredible film. I, also, really liked Roma, Vice, Green Book and The Favourite. Black Panther and Bohemian Rhapsody were pretty good – but not Best Picture material, in my opinion.)

– Once Upon A Time In Hollywood (I love it. But I love pretty much every other film in this category this year – the exception being Ford V. Ferrari… Uncut Gems should have been nominated instead.)

Not sure if this is on purpose or not, but I’m fine with it.

Because it still doesn’t make any sense that Carol wasn’t nominated
