i comment in a message board on the broadway world website and a few people have seen early screenings. one of them said that he enjoyed this movie very much and that the cast did a great job. he also said that this movie paints shug and celie’s relationship as unambiguously queer. i’m so glad that this movie won’t shy away from shug and celie’s relationship like the original movie did
It helps that the musical’s source material covers Celie and Shug’s relationship in great detail. There’s even songs dedicated to it. But of course, the movie itself could have undercut the romantic aspects anyway, so I’m glad to hear it remains prominent. I’m also happy to hear the film and performances are apparently great!

I feel like Oprah was so hands on a producer, it would have felt a bit narcissistic if she also put herself in the film. She’s also going to be everywhere for the promo. I know for certain she already filmed content while on set – she was seen by many with a film crew following her around.

Did you learn anything else about the film. Especially interested in hearing about the new songs and who sings them. I think David Alan Grier’s character has one of them and i’d be surprised if they didn’t give one to Jon Batiste.

Hmm – I remember reading a while back that they had filmed a musical number in a prison – I wonder if that will either be Celie or Squeak. In the broadway musical there’s a great scene when Celie visits Sophia in prison but in the book Squeak also goes and is assaulted by the prison warden (this is actually why she insists on being called Mary Agnes during the infamous dinner table scene.) There was so much that Spielberg cut and/or changed from the book that it’s exciting to where this film goes.
On the other hand – if the musical numbers take place in Celie’s imagination does that mean that she’s present and a part of most of the numbers?
