It’s not exactly clear, we do know that Cynthia was also preparing to film Wicked and there was talk of their being an overlapping conflict between both filing schedules. HOWEVER, TCP wrapped principle photography a good amount of time before Wicked started to rehearsing/filming so I am unsure if that was exactly true or not. I haven’t heard any chatter about Drama, Contracts or anything so it’s not really clear what happened. I do know that she was intending on being on this project because she said as much in some interviews. We do know that this cast had to audition, Danielle brooks and Fantasia both have spoken a little bit about auditioning. Phylicia Pearl Who plays young Celie has also spoken publicly about auditioning to play Celie but not getting that role. She was called back later for young celie. So it is possible the Cynthia auditioned but who knows.
I was going to say – to this point, I don’t believe Wicked was an actual conflict. We knew Fantasia had the role before Cynthia was announced for Wicked and Phylicia Pearl said in an interview that she auditioned at the start of 2021 – so there had to have been a world where Cynthia could have done both, if she could have.

Ya’ll really get on here and say anything. Alice Walker had a hand in casting her in the film.
March 22, 2023 at 3:09 pm #1205360376i really want this movie to make history at the oscars next year. if fantasia wins for her performance, she would be the 2nd black woman to win the best actress oscar. and if blitz bazawule wins best director, he would be the first black director in history to win the best director oscar. that would be amazing to see
March 22, 2023 at 4:34 pm #1205360505This being Fantasia’s big screen debut would mirror the casting of Whoopi in the original The Color Purple. Fantasia will bring a certain freshness to the material. We have seen Cynthia in this role or singing the material in recent years.
March 22, 2023 at 4:45 pm #1205360511I’m shocked at any negative talk about Cynthia Errivo’s performance on Broadway…. It was literally the best on stage performance I have ever seen… And I saw a Saturday matinee even… The crowd went absolutely nuts. There was a 10 minute show stopping standing ovation in the middle of the show after “I’m Here”. Just astounding…. She was brilliant on all levels…
I am very excited to see what Fantasia will bring to the role though. She was wonderful during the first Broadway run.

She’s definitely not bad – I just don’t buy her in roles like The Color Purple, Harriet or Aretha that require an understanding of black American cultural nuances. It always feels just like a performance. I prefer her in roles like Widows. I’m also sure she’ll do well in Wicked.
March 22, 2023 at 8:02 pm #1205360644After Danielle Deadwyler’s snub I don’t put anything past the Academy. The Color Purple could be a masterpiece and still get snubbed. Black and brown and other POC talent doesn’t get the same treatment as their white counterparts.
March 23, 2023 at 7:25 am #1205360913If you ever want to hear how wonderful Erivo was in the last Broadway revival, simply ask her. She is more than happy to tell you how talented she is.

Michelle Yeoh just won. I know she isn’t black, but still a WOC. It’ll take another 24 years or thereabouts for another WOC to win. The Danielle Deadwyler offense proves that this category isn’t meant for our women. I’ll just be okay with a nomination

Fair. But DD is a relatively unknown actress and really only had Whoopi in her corner. TCP has more established acts w/ Oprah, Spielberg and Quincy Jones. This cast will definitely have more visibility.

I’ve never been wrong about the Best Actress nominees since I started predicting the 2017 Oscars. Aside from this, only her stans are hoping she gets nominated, then when she doesn’t it’s “F—k the Oscars,” “#OscarsSoWhite” and all of that bull. They’re setting themselves up to be disappointed when she isn’t. Fantasia can’t act her way out of a brown paper bag; she couldn’t play herself in her own Lifetime biopic from seventeen years ago. Yes, she’s played Celie on Broadway, but she over-acted and over-emoted in every scene, and screamed her way through the songs, per usual. I will support the film though since the 1985 version means so much to the culture, and I’m curious to see if it meets or exceeds my expectations. The cast I assembled to play these roles are better than who they chose.
Who would you rather have play Celine? Cynthia Erivo? I’m genuinely asking.

Till was not a masterpiece…

Did correctly predict Ruth Negga in Loving over Amy Adams in Arrival? Lol
Because I remember that season so well. When everyone was underrating Negga because she only got a Globe nomination (which had two lead actress categories) and a Critics Choice nomination (which had up to 7 nominees in the category), so no one saw her as a top 5. And everyone was predicting Amy Adams because she got nominated at all four precursors and because she was in a likely Best Picture nominee and had been snubbed in some people’s eyes just two years prior for Big Eyes. But as the nominations drew closer, I saw Negga coming a mile away but I didn’t want to stop predicting Adams because I loved her and Arrival but I just knew Negga was going to get it deep down. Which turned out to be true. Lol
