Excited to see this ball finally rolling! I think H.E.R. could be good as Squeak, but I’d have to see it first.

Also, to my dismay, a Cynthia Erivo casting announcement is probably upon us, isn’t it…….?

I honestly think they will go with an unknown like they did for the original film. Cynthia Erivo is too famous now.

^Then again, given all the fame Cynthia Erivo has received since she did The Color Purple on Broadway, I think it would make sense to at least consider her for this movie. I’m sure Warner Brothers would appreciate having as many established names in it as possible. After all, it’s not like it’s a requirement for the role of Celie to be played by a newcomer like how it is for Tracy Turnblad in Hairspray.

Its not a requirement, and I’m sure they are definitely considering her….but she has literally sang “I’m Here” everywhere at this point. We’ve seen and heard her version of Celie….and she’s won an Emmy, Tony, and Grammy for it. Its time to give this role to someone else, imo. If anyone was to reprise it….I’d rather it be Fantasia.

Anything to keep her far away from this project. She’s a brilliant actress and singer and her turn in “I’m Here” is phenomenal and influenced many covers of the song everywhere, but her past comments on African-Americans would personally make me uncomfortable with her casting. I also feel it might be continue the controversy surrounding Erivo taking traditionally African-American roles. It might be wise to go with someone else.

That said, I’m praying for Heather Headley to return as Shug Avery from her Broadway run. She was magnificent.

Thanks! Danielle Brooks portrayed Sofia on Broadway & got a Tony nomination for it so she might be their choice.

I also have a theory that Beyoncé could be in the running for Shug considering the director, Blitz Bazawule, helped helm Black Is King.

I want her to reprise her role, given that she was incredible in it, and she’s immensely talented, and it’d be cool for her to win an EGOT for just this project.

That being said, I agree that her past comments need to be addressed. I didn’t know about them until after you told me, so I feel like that wouldn’t really affect her chances but… Anyway, I think it would be good of her to apologize and that she understands and then I think it should be fine.

Colman Domingo would be great for Mister. His recent Oscar-worthy performance in Zola shows he can go from calm to terrifying in the blink of an eye.

Yeah, if we’re talking about awards prospects, I don’t think the (most certainly inevitable) backlash will hurt her since it didn’t stop her from getting a nomination for Harriet. And it’s upsetting because she gives my favorite Celie performance on Broadway, but I can never fully enjoy it knowing I have no reason to believe she respects the culture and people of the characters she portrays.

If I had to offer an alternative, I think Celia Rose Gooding (who is, coincidentally, the daughter of LaChanze, the actress who originated Celie on Broadway) would be great or Hailey Kilgore. I could also see them gravitating towards somewhat more famous pop/R&B singers a la Halle Bailey. I could see, granted it probably being a long shot, Chloe Bailey or Normani, both of whom are very popular in the music industry right now.
