I also have a theory that Beyoncé could be in the running for Shug considering the director, Blitz Bazawule, helped helm Black Is King.
Beyoncé-adjacent but Kelly Rowland’s has been doing a lot more acting work recently (TV one-offs, Hallmark movies, Bad Hair) and I’d love to see her tackle Shug.

Random but Kelly would be perfect for a Donna Summer biopic. The resemblance is uncanny.

Out of these suggestions, I would love Fantasia, especially since she did the role herself once! Plus, she’s an exemplary singer. As for Mbedu and Layne, they’re terrific actresses, but I slightly hold reservations about their singing abilities, especially since Celie is a very hard role vocally. But if they can sing, I’d love them for the part!

August 28, 2021 at 6:24 pm #1204421701with about Glynn Turnman as Old Mister?
I could see it. Can he sing?
ReplyCopy URLAugust 29, 2021 at 11:13 am #1204422824I don’t see how Cynthia Erivo won’t return. The reason this musical film version is even happening has a lot to do with the success she achieved reviving the Broadway musical with her colossal performance.
I remember that Oprah had wanted to do the film version after the original Broadway production with Fantasia in the lead, but it got stuck in development. The Broadway revival literally revived the opportunity for a movie to be made.
Having said that, I would LOVE for Hailey Kilgore to take the lead role. …but I’m pretty certain Oscar-nominated Cynthia has it in the bag.

I’m not sure about Glynn. but I don’t think old Mister has a solo though. I could be wrong.

I think that Hailey might be too conventionally pretty (in the context of the story) to play the role. She seems more of a Nettie, imo.

Like the PERFECT Celie.

Keke Palmer?????
Yes, I can see it so clearly in my head! Hear me out: She’s done musical theatre before and is a brilliant actress. I think she has great comedic timing, which would work for “Miss Celie’s Pants”. I can also see her bringing out the vengeance she feels for Mister in the final act. And I can just feel like she would do “I’m Here” justice if given the role. I think she could also really bring out the tender and dramatic moments she feels with Shug and learning how to reclaim her Black womanhood. I know Keke Palmer seems a little unorthodox or totally miscast, but I can really, really see her doing it.

I really think they should and will go with a new face for Celie….exactly like that did with Whoopi Goldberg.
