Opening this Friday, September 17, 2021. Currently 60 on Metacritic with 16 reviews. The consensus seems to be raves for a committed Jessica Chastain, but surrounded by a middling film. Possible Actress + Makeup/Hairstyling contender, with an outside chance for Andrew Garfield.

    I’ve now seen it.

Personally speaking, I thought the movie was just decent and I had a hard time really loving the movie. But I can see the audience appeal to this film and I think the Academy may very well like it. And yeah… Chastain can fucking win. She’d be a boring choice for me and I will probably prefer Stewart, but with all the raves she has right now and after actually seeing the performance, I can totally see her winning for it especially if Spencer isn’t exactly the Academy’s cup of tea. Chastain will also be campaigning this year. I’d hate to be a Twitter hypebeast, but when you see the movie, you’ll know.

When everyone who has seen the movie is universally insisting that Chastain can win… I feel safe predicting her for a nomination.

During an interview at the  film’s premiere in NYC, Chastain talked about being targeted by someone on social media: https://mobile.twitter.com/FilmUpdates/status/1438184588241772546

Yeah we know who she’s talking about, first initial G, last name starts with R. She’s a straight hater and has been for years. She did the exact same thing with Jennifer Lawrence. Apparently she waited a very long time to get an interview with Lawrence, and it didn’t pan out for whatever reason, and she was pure hateful against her too. Idk what went down with GR and Chastain, but I am sure something similar if I had to guess. I don’t even know how people to subscribe to her channel. She likes pretty much nothing but pointless dude bro movies and hates on MANYYY talented actresses.

I saw this the other night and loved it. As I posted in the Best Actress thread, Chastain is absolutely brilliant. I would love to see her win (a nomination is certain), but it is too early to predict a winner yet in my opinion. Regardless, she was transcendent truly embodying Tammy Faye and bringing beautiful layers of heartbreak, hilarity and genuine insight into a fascinating woman… And Andrew Garfield was great too. He’s definitely a good contender for a Supporting nom. The film should also be in the running for costumes and hair/makeup.

Chastain effortlessly shading Grace and promoting the movie at the same time was already GG Comedy actress win worthy.

This campaign is severely iconic already and she kinda won me over in the interview clip.

So, maybe I shouldn’t have watched Respect last night going into this, but damn this is yet another failed biopic. Please Hollywood, unless you’re going to give us fully fleshed out stories for biopics that doesn’t just skim through someone’s greatest hits or greatest moments as an icon, stop making them. This first half goes so damn fast and cuts from scene to scene so rapidly, I was just trying to play catch-up with it all. After the first half, it does indeed pickup and finally get into the meat of her story, with a very good ending, but yeah this wasn’t good. All the supporting characters are one note and hardly bring any value to the story, particularly Garfield. Let’s get to the good.

Jessica Chastain- when we talk about actors giving everything they got and completely transforming into a role to where we can sit back and completely forget who is playing them, she hits the mark completely. She completely embodied Tammy Faye here and it’s brilliant.  I loved her performance and this is the best I’ve seen of her to date. You don’t even see Jessica the actress here, you see her as Tammy Faye herself. I just think the film being mediocre won’t do her any justice. I mean it’s really not a good movie at all. It’s hard to root for her to win as a  fan, because I want her to win for an actual good movie, not an okay one.

If Chastain wins here it’s going to be like Meryl Streep winning for The Iron Lady is all I’m saying at the end of the day. A completely transformative and captivating performance, in a very mediocre film. I just kind of hoped her first W would be for a good film.
