The Russo Brothers will be reuniting with their MCU scribes Markus and McFeely for their next film, a big-budget thriller based on the best-selling novel. The Gray Man will be distributed by Netflix and star Ryan Gosling as the protagonist and Chris Evans as the antagonist.

I’m not expecting this to be a major awards contender of course (even if I am partial to Evans getting a nomination at some point, though Hemsworth is probably more likely). However, this should be a major technical player, as Netflix is sinking $200 million – the biggest budget of any Netflix movie ever – into this. Also, this should be much better than Cherry, as following that dud I think what the Russos really need to do well is a good writing team to back them up (their previous well-known TV and film work had a talented ensemble crew behind them, and Cherry had their inexperienced sister). With this, they do have that, so at the very least it should be a good, even great, movie – right?

Oh, and someone from Community better cameo.

    I seriously doubt it.

This looks like a summer release, and it would have to be critically acclaimed in order to get even tech nominations (and even then, doubtful, because the MCU outside of Black Panther failed to get more than Visual Effects and Makeup/Hairstyling).

I don’t think this is getting awards.

Also, Chris Evans is more likely to get awards than Chris Hemsworth at this point, due to Hemsworth focusing on action and sci-fi films as opposed to Evans, who is trying new things (nothing wrong with either path, just trying to explain the results).

    Movie-lover overall.

I don’t think this is getting any awards. The reason Netflix put in so much money is because they want to create a franchise out of it (it’s based on a series of books). I personally don’t think Evans and Hemsworth are good actors  (I know Hemsworth isn’t in this movie). Hemsworth hasn’t found success outside the MCU. His non-Marvel films are critical and commercial flops and he seems busy chasing the next potential franchise (MIB, Extraction) instead of a good script.

Is it a retelling of “The Fugitive”? Because plot sounds almost exactly the same.

I mention Hemsworth is more likely mainly because Hemsworth’s branching out into comedy shows he has more range and also showcases a potential way for him to get a baity role (i.e. a dramedy film), whereas Evans has only showcased two types: a goody two-shoes and an asshole. Though I will concede, Evans no longer being in the MCU certainly helps his chances, and Hemsworth sticking to action roles means he won’t go for it for a while.

Kind of. It’s more like that combined with Enemy of the State combined with the first Mission: Impossible movie. If going by the novel, there will be a revenge angle to it as well, so hopefully not too much like The Fugitive.
