Kids fantasy movies seldom do well at the Oscars. Eli Roth movies NEVER do well at the Oscars. The trailer indicates it could be a fun film but nothing that will get it any awards consideration. Best case scenario (IF it does well enough critically and commercially AND there are hardly any competition in the field): A filler Golden Globe Best Musical/Comedy Actress nomination for Cate Blanchett. That’s it.

I wont be surprised if Cate Blanchett get nominated. Given the Merly Streep nominations for ‘Into the woods’

One thing that’s different is that it’s Meryl Streep who we now know will get nominated for almost anything these days and another thing is that her role of the Witch in Into the Woods is one of the most celebrated roles in musical theatre, and it’s a Stephen Sondheim musical so that has extra prestige and an elitist factor despite the subject matter. The original concept of Into the Woods in its stage production was actually a mature and adult critique of the Disney-style sanctification of the fairy tale stories and offered life lessons and “morals” that adults should take away with the way life really is. That was lost once Disney did the adaptation.

This movie does look fun though and both Black and Blanchett look like they are giving very inspired performances. Maybe it can sneak in for some surprise nominations depending on the critical reception.

I wouldn’t be surprise though if the film got nominated for Best Costume Design especially if Cate Blanchett is in it.

If you look at the list of nominees and winners for Best Costume Design you will get amaze on how many films of Cate got nominated. Cinderella and Carol were both nominated in the same year.

There’s a chance for Best Cinematography and Score. For major categories I will reserve my predictions.
