This discussion was infiltrating the Oscar prediction thread, so I thought it would be better to make a separate one.
Do you think The Last Jedi was good or bad?
IMO, The Last Jedi is a fantastic movie. The screenplay, direction, the cinematography(!), the VFX, and acting were all great. The only moment I didn’t like was the moment where Rose saved Finn, it just didn’t fit in to the theme of sacrifice. Probably my favorite of the sequels and Top 5 overall.
ReplyHave a great day if you see this!
July 1, 2020 at 11:36 am #1203560993It was a bad movie with forgetable characters, The Rose and Finn arc was the worst of the movie, and those silly interactions between Rey and Kylo Ren, i hated those characters, and how to forget the assasination of Luke’s character, a dissaster.
ReplyCopy URLJuly 1, 2020 at 12:42 pm #1203561098I’ll keep my thoughts brief, since The Last Jedi discourse has become so exhausting and I’ve already talked about it extensively, but I’ve always loved The Last Jedi for it’s bold narrative choices and forgiven it’s flaws. Yes, it has some low parts, like the overlong Canto Bight sequence (which I enjoy, but could have been cut down) awkward/unintentional humor, and bad arcs for Finn and Rose, but the broad strokes of Luke Skywalker’s fall from grace, Rey’s struggle to bring Kylo to the light, only to fail, Kylo’s full evolution from pawn to master, Poe’s realization that he can’t win every battle by being reckless, and the near destruction of the Resistance on a scale we’ve never seen before, not to mention its morals of failure and growing from your mistakes that no other Star Wars film really has, makes its story my personal favorite out of all the films. Love or hate The Last Jedi, you can’t deny that Rian Johnson had a vision and it was executed clear as day in the final product, which is more than you can say for most other Star Wars directors.
Also, it’s visually the best Star Wars film by far (the Throne Room scene plus Holdo maneuver had my jaw on the floor when I saw it in theaters) and has some of the franchise’s greatest performances (Adam Driver’s performance as Kylo Ren in that film was Oscar worthy).

I would argue The Phantom Menace and Attack of the Clones are objectively bad. I personally don’t like Solo or The Rise of Skywalker either, but at least those films have redeeming qualities.

July 1, 2020 at 12:58 pm #1203561139Don’t really want to talk too much about it as I’ve become burned out with this series and it’s absurdly hateful fandom, but my opinion is it’s an okay film, but a bad sequel.
Some or the ideas and characters it introduces are interesting and cool, while others aren’t.
It’s real problem is that it spent too much time trying to subvert what people thought of The Force Awakens, rather than trying to develop the story and characters from that film in a more meaningful way.

I agree. Those two prequels have their moments, but they’re filled with so many plot holes, boring/awkward scenes, and bad effects.
Rise of Skywalker isn’t a good film, but unlike Phantom Menace which had all the potential in the world, it was screwed over by a lot of outside factors, as it essentially felt like “Damage Control: The Movie”. Honestly, they should’ve let Rian Johnson write and direct again. At least that way, the story he set up could’ve been resolved, and not half thrown away/half kind of reference.

I also think Colin Trevorow’s version of Episode 9 could have been a great finale to the sequel trilogy, since he didn’t try to retcon everything The Last Jedi did and instead built on it, plus added a lot of conceptually cool new ideas instead of just ripping off old ones. The draft we got is very rough, but it was also extremely early, so I’m sure with time he could have ironed out a lot of the problems and delivered a solid script.

July 1, 2020 at 1:28 pm #1203561202Best of the sequels by far, better than most of the original trilogy (save for the first film) but does not even come close to the prequels.
I’d give it a 2.5/5

Good point. I know why they went with the version that they did, but it would’ve looked a lot better if they stuck to their guns and continued with how Last Jedi set things up, even if it was divisive.

The irony is that at the ned of the day The Rise of Skywalker has become the most widely disliked Star Wars movie by critics and fans because of the fact that they tried to make everyone happy.

Last Jedi is definitely not better than Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi.
Same goes for all three prequels compared to those two.

The Last Jedi is about as good as either of the other sequels. Probably better than Rise of Skywalker, not sure between it and Force Awakens.

Not all performances from the originals are great, but I wouldn’t day they’re poorly acted. Many performances from those 3 movies, especially Harrison Ford, James Earl Jones, and Ian McDirmand, were quite memorable.

Jones is good, that’s true. McDiarmid also does well. People often say Ford is amazing, but I feel like his dialogue always sounds really forced.
