Loren is luminous and impactful in The Life Ahead; I would fully support a nomination, even if I consider the performance more supporting. The film would have benefited from having a few more scenes with Madame Rosa, particularly as she begins to unravel.
Ibrahima Gueye’s Momo is really the sole lead performance in the film, as it is told from his perspective from start to finish. He deserves breakthrough and age specific recognition. I felt overall the film left too many loose strands, often seeming as if some crucial scenes were missing, especially in terms of Madame Rosa and Lola. I would support Loren being nominated in either category. However, I think her narrative and status as a golden era legend would probably be more of a driving force for that than the actual performance for me.
I am not sure a lesser or less legendary actress would even be in contention for this role in this particular adaptation. The Diana Warren penned song is lovely, and I think it would be a worthy nominee, or winner, depending on the final list of nominees.

Oh, the book is so beautifully written. No doubt, it’s better than not only this one, but all of its adaptations. I watched the film a few months ago and it was good but I excepted more. It felt kind of rushed and not emotional enough. Nevertheless, I enjoyed it. And while Sophia is always a pleasure to watch, Ibrahima was the light of the film. The kid was simply amazing!

Unless SAG surprises us all and nominates her, I don’t see a path. The HFPA more than any other group should’ve been there for her, her being a legendary European star and all. But they weren’t, even while the film got two other nominations. She also may have needed a bigger critics push, like for Antonio Banderas last year.

ReplyCopy URLFebruary 4, 2021 at 10:57 am #1204022242Adams isn’t happening at the Oscars for that basic movie and performance…5th spot is still between Loren, Pike and Day for me. And all around there is a great lack of foreign language performances in precursors. Loren represents a generation severely affected by pandemic, surely they will see this category can’t belong to young and middle aged.

That would be nice if it does get nominated. It has been shortlisted.
