And in perhaps her richest big-screen role to date, Oscar-winner Colman felt in sync with her director…

I know it’s a competitive year, but maybe Colman can peak at the right moment.

If they’re saying her performance is better than the one in The Favorite I dont see how she can not win the oscar

Why hasn’t Olivia Colman been added to the prediction center yet?

Venice, NYFF, Telluride. Super solid festival run and an excellent one for a directorial debut. Congrats to Maggie!

In her striking feature directorial debut, Maggie Gyllenhaal adapts the 2006 novel of the same name by Elena Ferrante, a potent work of psychological interiority that follows Leda, a divorced, middle-aged professor on a solitary summer vacation who becomes intrigued and then oddly involved in the lives of another family she meets there. Oscar-winner Olivia Colman brilliantly embodies this quietly tempestuous character, finely shading in the enigmatic relationships she creates with strangers, while Jessie Buckley brings remarkable depth and nuance to Leda in flashbacks, in which we learn about the nature of her conflicted relationship to her own family. A moving, sometimes unsettling inquiry into motherhood and personal freedom, Gyllenhaal’s adaptation maintains Ferrante’s signature ambiguity and matter-of-fact style, and features an outstanding supporting cast, including Jessie Buckley, Ed Harris, Dakota Johnson, Paul Mescal, Alba Rohrwacher, and Peter Sarsgaard. A Netflix release.

OK so I remember watching The Oscar Experts’ original video from May where they talked about this and it lowkey seemed like something based off of a mom novel but now that I’ve actually looked into the material I am on board with this.

I expect big things for Colman and Buckley

I’ve mostly liked The Oscar Experts’ but they really said it was a mom novel?? Like some romance or Liane Moriarty thing?? That’s bizarre.

But incidentally, it’s kind of a sort spot for Elena Ferrante. All her books got these very romance-novel-like covers. It caused a huge dust-up in the literary world when My Brilliant Friend came out and she become this global phenom.

Justice for Passing, Tessa Thompson & Ruth Negga.

The Power of the Dog / Jane Campion / Benedict Cumberbatch / Kristen Stewart / Kirsten Dunst / Troy Kotsur

That’s the vibe I got at first, but I don’t think they really looked into the book or author all that much

Elena Ferrante is currently one of the most recognizable autors in overseas literature. It’s not exactly a “mom novel”. If you see HBO’s My Brilliant Friend, you have a taste of her style.
