I’m sorry I understand that everyone has different opinions, but how could you say that about TLD, and yet campaign HOG for BP?

HOG suffers from editing, directing, and screenplay issues, all while being tonally all over the place. While TLD’s trailer is absolutely misleading in terms of the nature of the film, it’s very much a straight forward psychological drama about a woman’s struggle with societal expectations and her own overwhelming guilt of motherhood.

Would also love to hear your thoughts on Colman’s performance. I’m a huge supporter of Gaga getting an Actress nom, but I think Colman gave a completely different and subtle performance that is just as deserving.

Laughing at them campaigning Buckley in supporting lol. Of course they would but it makes no sense. Harris is better than all the frontrunners in his category combined, wish they’d give him the win.

Solid flick; quite an obvious film in the end, which is the danger in adapting someone like Ferrante: do you literalize the sheer depth and power of the original writing, or do you adapt the piece into something completely esoteric and non-Netflix-friendly? Think Gyllenhaal probably chose wrong, if she wanted to make the better movie. But maybe she wanted to make the movie she made. Alas.

An interesting analysis of oranges in the film, especially in the last scene:

What’s the Significance of Oranges in The Lost Daughter?

It’s kinda wild to think how Colman was a Jennifer Coolidge-esque comedic character actor for 10 years+, and that’s now just a footnote in her career.

    The range.

I was heavily disappointed with how the whole doll thing ended. Leda could’ve come up with a better reasoning, “playing with it” is a lil anti-climatic. It’s also the climax of the film where she have already trusted and opened up to Dakota’s character, yet she still lied to her. That sequence could’ve elevated the movie.

Colman is great, tho I find her younger version better. And Dakota was great in this as well.

    She lied to her?

Ikr for many actors, Peep Show would have been a career peak. (Would love Coolidge to be given more varied opportunities! Came across her Seinfeld appearance randomly and floored by how intriguingly different a vibe she has when playing it straight)

I am impressed that Yorgos Lanthimos saw Colman as Queen Ann, after casting her as that hotel manager in Lobster before. The fact, that he saw the versatility that so many missed…

Exactly. The Trailer is the film’s biggest problem. While I did not go into the film anticipating a Black Swan/psychological thriller, many probably must have and The Lost Daughter is not that.

I hate it when people base their review or opinion of a movie on whether or not it met or exceeded expectations created by a trailer. Please review the actual movie. The trailer is a marketing tool; it is NOT the movie.

I enjoyed House of Gucci. It had issues, but it still got me hooked. The Lost Daughter even has a misleading title. It was never clear if Leda was searching for her missing daughter or just going nuts. Everything looked like an uninteresting nightmare. Only Buckley did something worthy of recognition. If it was good, the audience score would have been higher.

    Anticipate "Hold My hand".

    Lady Gaga is a genius

I’m sorry this movie was dull.
I loved Olivia’s complicated character and backstory but I think the script didn’t deliver as much as I was expecting tbh. It was a very frustating experience for me. Always expecting an explosive moment and it was always very subtle, too subtle imo.
Olivia is amazing as always but Nicole, Jessica, Gaga, Kristen, Penelope, JHud even Sandra Bullock (which is a no deal for the awards circuit with that movie) had strongest and way more memorable performances. And I haven’t see Licorice Pizza, Nightmare Alley, West Side Story and Worst Person in The World.

Y’all really justifying opinions by using audience scores? The Gaga stans and haters are equally embarrassing.

That’s what I’m trying to say. I did not go expecting a thriller but many would have. And it’s really bad marketing from the side of the filmmakers to show something in the trailer that the film isn’t. You really can’t blame the audience for showing up to see a thriller when that’s what the trailer highlighted it to be. When you deceive an audience like that, you bring the wrath of some viewers to yourself and it’s totally justified the way people are reacting to the film because of its trailer.
