Glenda Jackson was a very, very, very hot commodity with the Academy in the 1970s. Nominated four times and winning twice, all in Lead acting, in a six year period, she was destined to become one of the all-time greats.

Then, the 1980s came. She wasn’t as successful in film as she had been in the previous decade, and focused more on the stage.

Then, the 1990s came. She decided to abandon acting altogether and run for Parliament. She won, and served for most of the 1990s, the entirety of the 2000s, and the first half of the 2010s.

It was only a few years ago that she decided to return to acting. Although she has been strong, having finally won a Tony and joining the ranks of EOT just this year, there’s still a lingering question. What could’ve been?

Imagine if she hadn’t decided to run for Parliament, or if she had lost the election. What roles do you believe she could have taken instead of the actresses who were actually cast? Do you believe she could’ve returned to the same heights of stardom that she had achieved in the 1970s? How many more Oscar nominations?

Pretty much any role that Judi Dench has played in the last few years.

And Glenda would have played them all much better!

Glenda Jackson likely would have made a stellar Violet Weston. She was never on my radar then to think of the choice, but she reminds me of Deanna Dunagan in stature and presence. Not taking anything away from Queen Meryl, who I actually liked in this role a great deal and more than most. Top three in her lineup that year.
