In the years following their release, what movies nominated of their year would you say have attuned to iconic status? Movies that are still recognizable to the man on the street, as you could mentioned the title to the person and they’l have a recognizable clue of what you’re referring to. Movies that are spoofed enough in pop culture that even those who never saw the movie will claimed as having seen the finished product.

With the exception of the lost film The Patriot I have seen every nominated film. I must stress these selections are based on the criteria of ‘iconic’ and not what I personally consider the best. In some cases I have had to have ties because it was virtually impossible to decide between two of the nominees. In other cases I declare certain years as N/A because I do not believe that any of the nominated films are iconic, which does mean that I don’t think some of the nominated films in those years are very good and should be.

    1927/28 – Wings
1928/29 – None but I bet if The Patriot wasn’t lost it would be the one

Fascinating topic! I have a feeling “iconic” will be conflated with “most popular” though. A good example is one already mentioned with “American Sniper.” Average Joe Blow would probably only be able to rattle off that BP nominee b/c it was widely seen in flyover America. But there’s nothing remotely iconic about it from a content or filmmaking perspective. “Birdman,” on the other hand, had the novel tracking shot direction and Michael effin’ Keaton’s comeback vehicle that made it iconic for me, at least, but I doubt average viewers care about it all that much, even with its BP win. Really want to think about this one some more.
