This has definitely gotten both the “this is the worst movie I’ve ever seen” and “this is one of the best movies I’ve ever seen” reactions so congrats to Robert on joining an elite club, though I guess he was already there with The Lighthouse. A lot more of the unwashed masses will be seeing this one though.
The great unwashed? But not you, right?

ReplyCopy URLApril 22, 2022 at 10:30 pm #1204928277This was not it. A few months ago I said this was going to be a messy film but I was wrong, it wasn’t necessarily “messy”. However, it was unconvincing and bland in the worst way possible. Good crafts, a decent cinematography (some of the visual motifs really bothered me, very unstimulating) and some nice performances (Kidman), but Eggers filmmaking is to blame here. It tries very unsuccessfully to evoke Come and See by Elem Klimov, but it comes across as watered down mysticism where the story just flatlines throughout. For me, he fell short of his previous work and this lacks conviction, rhythm and creativity.

ReplyCopy URLApril 23, 2022 at 7:01 am #1204928700I attended a fully packed screening of The Northman in a Dolby theater. It was an epic experience. Robert Eggers has made yet another masterpiece.
ReplyCopy URLApril 23, 2022 at 9:06 am #1204928795Ok so I have to take this with the 3 best and 2 things that annoyed the hell out of me:
1)Alexander Skarsgård was great.
2)Anya Taylor-Joy was great.
3)Eggers per usual is one of the best directors out there.1) THAT scene between Alexander and Nicole……ew.
2) Nicole Kidman was a bit miscast in this in my opinion. Not saying she was bad but I wasn’t buying it.All things considered, it was a solid B+ from me.

I knew I could trust you for seeing both pos and neg. You aren’t the only one who felt Nicole is miscast.
And the gore? Just how bad is it?ReplyCopy URLThe Sunne in Splendour.

I prefer my roses whiteApril 23, 2022 at 11:18 am #1204928923I LOVE Nicole but I personally felt she was a miscast as well. She was good but something was off. There were some moments when it felt like her accent disappeared. I also had a few drinks prior so I could be wrong.
Her accent was off throughout her recent Oscar nominated performance, she’ll be fine

ReplyCopy URLApril 23, 2022 at 1:45 pm #1204929073I loved it, the performances, score, cinematography, storytelling…I love how Eggers almost became mainstream (for the cash I guess) but didn’t quite, still keeping his tone; Björk was MVP…but yeah unfortunately this won’t go anywhere outside techs

Stewart, Hawkins, Spall Spencer (Best Actress, Supporting Actress/Actor)April 24, 2022 at 4:03 pm #1204930321I agree that it might not going build any awards traction. The first two-thirds were slow without building much intensity. Bjork and Dafoe and even Hawke bring their A-games but the pacing felt off so their performances don’t fit seamlessly into the movie. The first chunk of the movie were giving The Green Knight but less mythical and seemingly bland.
The Nicole scene put the last third in motion and I found the rest of the movie enthralling. I started crying in fear of her. It’s unsettling but her impression is too brief. And like Anya, the character falls to the background.
The movie is about what Skarsgard is able to bring to the character. He’s best in show which is kind of sad because even Eggers’ vision falls behind Alexander. It’s his most accessible movie but it might have the least impact out of his three.
