Many people who loved the movie also said that it will be divisive. It’s not a “hater” invention. While critics love it, I do think the movie will be divisive among general audiences based on what I know about the movie and other responses. Let’s see what the word is like out of TIFF because the audiences are more basic there.

Yes, I have a hard time seeing The Power of the Dog winning the TIFF top prize – Belfast, The Eyes of Tammy Faye or The Humans are more their speed.. And if King Richard were at TIFF, it would swoop in.

I think Telluride will be more informative imo. It has a curious mix of high-brow/low-brow audience, and it can REALLY make things clear. Every year I went. The only problem with Telluride is that while it’s happening, it kinda seems like everybody loves every movie, but only initially—so one has to wait until after it’s over to really find out.

Obviously not winning People’s Choice. Super obvious.

My problem with the word divisive is that many people here, on twitter, and on Lb use it as a way to dismiss this movie’s chance despite the raves from the critics. Some of them even playing contrarian just for the sake of it. But yeah, I agree, let’s wait.

‘The Power of the Dog’ is Jane Campion’s best and most accessible movie. Benedict Cumberbatch’s best turn in a decade. Kirsten Dunst’s Oscar moment finally arrives. Kodi Smit-McPhee channeling young Anthony Perkins. Loved every bit of it. It’s her THERE WILL BE BLOOD!

THE POWER OF THE DOG (Campion, 2021): The anti-anti-western. The best and least mannered Benedict Cumberbatch performance I’ve seen. A nifty masterclass in Hitchcockian wrongfooting from Campion. Crazy this is her first feature in 12 years.

Methodical, unnerving & deeply complex in its characters & themes, THE POWER OF THE DOG will challenge audiences as much as it will enthrall. Benedict Cumberbatch’s imposing performance frightens & stuns while Kirsten Dunst commands our sympathy. Arresting cinematography & score.

Clayton Davis has very populist taste. Matt to some extent but he leans towards auteur films and he enjoys TPOTD as well. This is huge for TPOTD. I knew people exaggerated on audience divisiveness.

Jane Campion’s return is magnificent. Power of the Dog will certainly be a major awards contender.

#thepowerofthedog is meticulously crafted and wonderfully executed. Cumberbatch is a menacing force and Jonny Greenwood’s skin-prickling score is one I’ll be playing on repeat the second I can get my hands on it.

Jane Campion knows very well what she’s doing – #ThePowerOfTheDog is expertly rendered with the better Johnny Greenwood score of the year and superb acting in a powerful film about the American west with somewhat strange source material

THE POWER OF THE DOG – This might be my favorite film of the year so far. Jane Campion knocked it out of the park with this dark, complex examination of masculinity. Benedict Cumberbatch gives the performance of his career and the supporting cast matches him.

With the Power of the Dog Jane Campion proves she is one of the greatest living directors, maybe one of the greatest directors period. Right up there with John Ford and Stanley Kubrick. A hard film, a tough film but a flat out masterpiece.

Lol yeah, this feels almost like a redemption arc given how unexpected it is.
