That’s why I think Dunst will go Supporting. Benedict will probably be the center of the marketing/campaign. Another pic relesead and another one of BC.

Whether Dunst is Lead or Supporting is 50/50 at this point IMO. If Dunst goes Supporting I think she wins.

Overall I am so excited for this movie. The fact that it’s hitting all these festivals just confirms to me that it’s great.

“Benedict Cumberbatch is the broken heart and dark soul of this story.“

Jane Campion described Benedict Cumberbatch’s role for the London Film Festival. I am more inclined to believe Dunst goes supporting now.

What hits me of this image is that Cumberbatch is exactly how I’ve imagined Phil to be. The hands, the glaze, the look. I can already feel he’s pulled this off.

Given Marriage Story received a trailer 1 week before its Venice premiere it’s safe to say we are going to get a The Power of the Dog trailer next week. My best bet is some time between August 23-25. I can’t contain my excitement.

“Benedict Cumberbatch is the broken heart and dark soul of this story.“

Jane Campion described Benedict Cumberbatch’s role for the London Film Festival. I am more inclined to believe Dunst goes supporting now.

Maybe she will go supporting, but I’d caution against taking the marketing and Campion’s words at face value. I’m a bit more inclined to think the opposite (that Dunst will go Lead) because of the fact that it’s now at London as well and is following the Marriage Story/Roma/Nomadland run precisely, and since it can, it’ll want contenders in every category just like Marriage Story.

This is exactly the marketing I expected tbh. The story is strange that way: we get lulled into thinking it’s all about Phil, but it’s so immersive that the shifts are surprising. To say more will spoil it, but Campion’s outline diminishes everyone else, for reasons that’ll become clear when you watch it (IMdB has it in the storyline section. I find it very intriguing that it mentions not even one personality quality of Rose, George, Peter lol).

It’s like Phantom Thread—Krieps was still Lead. It’s not Marriage Story, which has parity from the beginning. I’m expecting a film where “who the story is about” keeps shifting in the same way it did in The Favourite. I’m trying to think of more two- or three-handers, like The Hours and Chicago, but in both cases because they were all women, 1 or 2 of the leads were frauded.

I am so rooting for Dunst to go lead since it’s a Campion directed film it would only be the most fitting. Hoping she takes the Volpi Cup to match with her Cannes Best Actress trophy too.
