Cumberbatch going strong on the method acting- story about 3 occasions of nicotine poisoning along with previous story about washing. These guys know how to campaign.

Dunst is going less heavy on the method acting but she did it nonetheless: cleaning Campion’s apartment with 1920s bucket/mop etc. Not talking at all for days before filming, getting into a really insecure place. Learning to play the piano.

    Will be great.
Smit-McPhee much more prominent than Plemons around the traps & Wegner is everywhere. Give her that first ever female Cinematography Oscar AMPAS. I’ve never seen an expansive yet so intimate shoot. Ever.

Yeah Wegner is getting a LOT of visibility. She’s even gone to some of the regional film fests to rep the film. I love it!

    LET’S NUDGE IT ALONG.

I’m SO curious as to how the Q&A with Kathryn Hahn went. She’s so intelligent, I’m betting it was a smarter Q&A than any other they’ve had thus far.

Unrelatedly: Kirsten Dunst, fashion icon, is wearing a dress that looks like it’s made out of moss and it’s an absolute eyesore.

Reminds me of when I met her at NYFF. Lovely dress, but it was like omg this is blinding me while I’m literally talking to you lol.

Love the commitment to absolute frumpiness. Also all her interviews are low-key I’M A MOTHER NOW, I AIN’T GOT TIME FOR YOUR BULLSHIT which is just AMAZING lololol

Yes would love hear back about the Q & A. The commitment of the cast & the crew to this film is extraordinary

Honestly, out of everyone I’m most impressed by Ari Wegner’s stamina. She’s gone to like Mill Valley Film Fest and Hamptons Film Fest and everything earthly possible. Kodi went to quite a few too (sewing up his nod 100%. He’s SUCH a lock it’s not even funny). Dunst & Cumberbatch have done less but still more than the actors for any other film. Has any film campaigned more?

The Lost Daughter hasn’t had Colman or Buckley at most things (Johnson has). Rebecca Hall went everyyyyyyywhere. But I think TPOTD really does have the BIGGEST campaign, like…..screenings everywhere, film festivals everywhere, and unlike the other biggies, somebody big from the film ALWAYS attends, unlike for the other films. That’s a pretty big deal! People feel important when you come to their “less important” festival.

the campaign is certainly very strong this far. Cast, Campion, Wegner everywhere. Netflix didn’t invest over $35m to not make a big Oscar play this year.

I’m pretty sure the Letterboxd score is getting higher. The reactions coming out of AFI have been more positive than the ones from past festivals.

Also, I’m glad Goldderby people don’t know what Production Design is and The Power of the Dog stayed with 100/1 odds for a long time. The same with Costumes.

“But it isn’t showy!” The Irishman and Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom also didn’t have showy Production Design/Costume Design, and they still got nominated regardless (and Ma Rainey won). Netflix is going to make sure The Power of Dog is widely seen by industry, and this will translate in overperformance in crafts.

Yeah this is fascinating to me! They built all the sets, from the ranch to the inn at a very specific location, it’s actually very EXTRA in terms of production design actually.

Costumes…maybe I’m wrong because I’ve never done a deep dive into the Costumes category, but I always felt like that branch went for fashion in a sense? All the costumes are perfectly period-accurate and exact and detailed but the one female character (and the surrounding ones) is very very drab. You think it could actually be a thing in Costumes? I don’t actually know, I’m just wondering.

I’m counting on the movie overperforming like The Irishman and The Revenant, which didn’t have showy costume design either. The branch loves western based costumes also
