It all seemed to be coming up roses for most of the season. Critic wins, audience engagement and a film that could finally win Netflix that coveted Best Picture trophy. Nomination day came and it looked unstoppable. Where did it all go wrong? How did a movie with 3 nominations topple a juggernaut like Dog? Was it a poor campaign? A matter of taste? Jane Campion’s speech?

March 27, 2022 at 8:49 pm #1204883804I think it’s fairly straightforward: it was a movie that most people professed some admiration for, but not many people really loved. Which meant it was vulnerable when a movie that people did love came along.

ReplyCopy URLMarch 27, 2022 at 8:57 pm #1204883908At the end of the day, voters are fickle and weird. They vote for whatever makes their brain vibrate the right way at the right time. It’s not worth reading too much into it.
Oscar watchers often end up thinking that, like…the Oscars are some sort of Hunger Games, where every movie but the winner is zapped from history. And that’s not really it, it’s just a bunch of inside baseball that doesn’t have anything to do with the actual quality of the movies.

March 27, 2022 at 8:58 pm #1204883927Can we talk like adults, please? This whole “nyeah nyeah nyeah my movie beat up your movie” shit is stupid.
ReplyCopy URLMarch 27, 2022 at 9:00 pm #1204883949Coda was the feel good film people loved. The Power of the Dog realistically only could have won four Oscars, five perhaps if Cumberbatch had caught on. But it wasn’t going to win in the tech categories or in Best Supporting Actress. Netflix has long been a threat to the film industry so expect it to get shafted more often than not.

Cry moar. Also, you can quote me. Don’t direct something at me and pretend it isn’t geared toward me. That’s being a man child. Be a man and direct things at me, bro.
I can talk however the fuck I want. Go cry somewhere else. I had to put up with Dog stans this whole season, the last couple of weeks has been tough on yall and now suddenly I’m the bad guy.

Oscar wanted something heart tugging this year.

If CODA had been discovered earlier, who else would’ve been nominated?

Imagine if Apple gets Scorsese a win next year when Netflix couldn’t
