The game is rigged against this with Metacritic counting the variety review as only an 80 when it’s basically a head-to-toe rave.December 1, 2020 at 2:49 pm #1203887896
Interested to watch and judge for myself. Scores ranging from a 100 to 25 on Metacritic? Guess it is truly a “love it or hate it” flick.December 2, 2020 at 6:26 am #1203889145
As of now, this movie has a 78% critical rating on Rotten Tomatoes. The consensus reads: “Through fiery songs and dance breaks, The Prom‘s bonanza of glitz, glitter, and jazz hands might be enough to whisk audiences away.”

Variety was a rave, including for Corden. “Corden may be criticized in some quarters for portraying Barry as a gay stereotype, but like Christopher Guest in “Waiting for Guffman” he burrows so deeply into the character’s quibbling insouciance that he gives him a three-dimensional essence. He’s soulfully funny and touching.” While Kidman gets a meh one sentence notice “Nicole Kidman, all self-effacing warmth, gets one big number, the Fosse-esque “Zazz,” and while she does it charmingly, it’s a little cringe-y, at least for me, to see Bob Fosse turned into a brand/meme/signifier.”
However, Vanity Fair was an outright pan and hated Corden so much the title was “James Corden Should Have Been Banned from The Prom” and the performance was dissected as such “Corden, who is straight, is so bad in The Prom—somehow both appalling and terminally bland—that it had me thinking maybe the hardliners were right along. Forget the whole case-by-case thing: No more straight actors playing gay men until the sins of The Prom are properly atoned for.” While Kidman gets meh-ed once again “We are meant to be drawn in by the big names: Corden, Nicole Kidman, Keegan-Michael Key, Kerry Washington, Meryl Streep. They’re mostly put to waste. Kidman is stuck in that obfuscating Fosse number and otherwise disappears”
This doesn’t seem like a consensus movie at all. I think for entertainment it could be fine, but not sure if this will gain awards traction outside of the Globes.December 4, 2020 at 5:25 am #1203893744

I wish they get a Grammy for the soundtrack. It sounds really good.
