If the Academy Awards made the Acting categories just Lead and Supporting, with no split on gender, who would be nominated?

    My take for 2020;

Best Acting For a Leading Role:

    • Joaquin Phoenix, Joker
    • Adam Driver, Marriage Story
    • Renee Zellweger, Judy
    • Scarlett Johansson, Marriage Story
    • Leonardo DiCaprio, Once Upon a Time In Hollywood

Best Acting For a Supporting Role:

    • Brad Pitt, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood
    • Laura Dern, Marriage Story
    • Scarlett Johansson, Jojo Rabbit
    • Tom Hanks, A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood
    • Margot Robbie, Bombshell

    Thoughts?

Have a great day if you see this!

    FYC: Anthony Hopkins- The Father
FYC: Chadwick Boseman - Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom

Don’t see the point of even entertaining this.

That right up there is the reason why we have no combined categories.

    I would have nominated
Antonio Banderas – Pain & Glory
Adele Haenel – Portrait of a Lady On Fire
    Isabelle Huppert – Frankie
    Elisabeth Moss – Her Smell
    Brad Pitt – Ad Astra

    Not sure about supporting.

I agree, but I can’t help my picks. Last year the actor categories were completely packed while the actress ones were extremely weak.

I’d take Renee for Judy out of that but I’d rather snub one of the men and have Florence Midsommar in it too, still sad to see even small indie awards snubbed her work for the film.
And the woman last year were stronger but over looked.
Writing & Directing category is the reason it’s gendered (look at the grammys).

    That would be terrible.

    What I think would happen:

    2019:

    Lead
Leonardo DiCaprio, Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood
    Adam Driver, Marriage Story
    Scarlett Johansson, Marriage Story
    *Joaquin Phoenix, Joker
    Renee Zellweger, Judy

    Supporting
    Laura Dern, Marriage Story
    Al Pacino, The Irishman
    Joe Pesci, The Irishman
*Brad Pitt, Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood
    Margot Robbie, Bombshell

    2018:

    Lead
Bradley Cooper, A Star Is Born
    Olivia Colman, The Favourite
Lady Gaga, A Star Is Born
    *Rami Malek, Bohemian Rapsody
    Viggo Mortensen, Green Book

    Supporting
    *Mahersala Ali, Green Book
    Adam Driver, BlacKkKlansman
Regina King, If Beale Street Could Talk
    Emma Stone, The Favourite
    Rachel Weisz, The Favourite

    2017:

    Lead
    Daniel Day-Lewis, Phantom Thread
    Daniel Kaluuya, Get Out
    Frances McDormand, Three Billboards…
    *Gary Oldman, Darkest Hour
    Meryl Streep, The Post

    Supporting
    Willem Dafoe, The Florida Project
    Woody Harrelson, Three Billboards…
    Allison Janney, I, Tonya
    Laurie Metcalf, Lady Bird
    *Sam Rockwell, Three Billboards…

That world would be even bleaker.

I know, I usually have the same problem but backwards.

I think there’s already a thread about this from last year.

Why are people against this idea? It would crowd too many people out, or do you believe there is an actual difference between a female and male acting performance?

I think inevitably the men would have more nominees each year unfortunately. But I also do think that the current system is pretty exclusionary to non-binary actors.
