EXCLUSIVE: A24 and Darren Aronofsky’s Protozoa Pictures are teaming up for the first time on the upcoming film The Whale with Brendan Fraser set to star and Aronofsky on board to direct.

A24 will have worldwide rights. MacArthur winning playwright, Samuel D. Hunter (Greater Clements) will adapt the film based on his critically- acclaimed 2012 play of the same name. The production was praised by the New York Times and won the Drama Desk Award, Lucille Lortel Award for Outstanding Play, GLAAD Media Award, Drama League and Outer Critics Circle nominations for Best Play.

“Adapting my play into a screenplay has been a real labor of love for me,” said Hunter. “This story is deeply personal and I’m very thankful it will have the chance to reach a wider audience. I’ve been a fan of Darren’s ever since I saw Requiem for a Dream when I was a college freshman writing my first plays, and I’m so grateful that he’s bringing his singular talent and vision to this film.”

The film follows a 600-hundred-pound recluse who is hiding away from the world and slowly eating himself to death.

He’s never made blockbusters so I’m unsure what you’re getting at?

Hopefully this means we get a full blown Brendan Fraser comeback 👏🏾

This is definitely playing at Venice. But can Brendan Fraser win the Volpi Cup? I would love to see that.

Hope it quietly starts collecting wins for both Aronofsky and Fraser. Fibresci, Volpi, etc.
This has got to be a poignant role for Fraser.

I’ve not read the play (our library doesn’t have it) so was wondering for whoever saw it or read it will Samantha Morton have much to do? I’m excited for her to be in a high profile drama again…

Sorry Vicki haven’t seen it and don’t read those kinds of books/plays but I’m guessing it’s a substantial part. It’s such a tiny cast of actors.
She’s just so stellar a walk on would set her apart.

Hopefully this pic is as good as The Wrestler and Requiem for a Dream

I’m optimistic. He’s brought some of his old team back and that’s encouraging. I get choked up reading the story synopsis.

From what I’ve heard, Sadie Sink’s role is the one to look out for. Then again, people are comparing this most to The Wrestler and I’m not sure Evan Rachel Wood got much support for that. Plus, like Marisa Tomei before her, Samantha Morton is a previous nominee and that’s certainly going to make the Academy salivate, though I’d prefer Sink.

Honestly though? I only care about Brendan Fraser having his Mickey Rourke moment. I think we can all agree on that.

I honestly think Hong Chau will be the supporting actress push for this film and they will probably sacrifice Sadie Sink by campaigning her as lead actress. And I’m currently predicting Samantha Morton for She Said because her role in that movie is similar to a role in All the President’s Men that got nominated.
